Chest Mucus with Cough
I had a bad bacterial infection, and it left me with fluid behind the lung and diaphragm. None of the medication has helped. I am constantly coughing, but not bringing up any mucus, otherwise I feel good. What can I do naturally to rid this mucus from my chest. I think I might also have some allergies that flare up this time of year.

Staying well hydrated will help loosen the mucous. Ask your doctor if an Rx for Tessalon Perls would be appropriate. Also, ask if a cool air humidifier would be appropriate.
Honey in warm liquids will relieve some of the inflammation in your throat. Some lung diseases use dry cupping to get things moving. Ask your doctor if that would be appropriate for you.
So sorry for your cough. I had one for almost 2 yrs. Finally the doctor perscribed the Tessalon pearls 200 mg. Along with some breathing treatments for the mucus. I hardly ever cough any more but since then I’ve been diagnosed with IPD. Sure feel rough with this new med I’m on. Take care Susie.
When I suggest cuppi g I mean to cup the hand and Pat the back like you do an infant.
Just have to ask! Do you have a Pulmonary Physician and has he/she done a chest x-ray, MRI with and without contrast, and/or CT with and without contrast. That should pretty much give you a thorough chest assessment and work-up. Very well could change (or not) or alter your treatment plan.
Everyone is different, but here is my recent experience. Hope it helps.
I am 80 and am definitely medication averse. I had a nagging cough for about three months, was also coughing up mucus several times a day with lots of coughing after waking in the morning. I think the cough was the result of a cold that bothered me for 2 plus weeks.
My primary doc listened to my breathing and thought I had developed asthma or COPD, so she loaded me up with several meds etc. and told me to make an appointment for PFT’s, Pulmonary Function Tests.
Here is what she prescribed, versus what I used/did, along with eating plenty of oranges, for vitamin C, inhaling aroma of essential peppermint oil, and increasing garlic in my diet.
1. Prescribed 40 mg prednisone for 5days: I took 40 for 3 days, then 20 on day 4, then 1/2 of a pill for 10mg on day 5.
2. Prescribed Albuterol 2 times a day as needed: I did not use it at all.
3. Prescribed NeilMed sinus rinse 1-2 times a day: I did this.
4. Prescribed following up 3. above with Flonase spray, 2 sprays each nostril once a day for 5 days: I did this. except I did only 1 spray in each nostril on day 5.
5. Prescribed Afrin 2 times a day for 3 days max: I did it for 2 days.
6. Prescribed Breztri: Never took it.
7. Prescribed Mucinex for 5 days max: I took half the prescription.
Results:
Cough and mucus were completely gone after day 5. That was over a three weeks ago, perfect breathing ever since. Oxygen level 98-99, BP 68/110, resting/sitting heart rate 67. Canceled appointment for PFT's.
Again, we are all different, but maybe there's something in my experience that can help you and others.
Thanks for the information. I am using Musinex and Tessalon Pearls were prescribed for the cough. They did not work at all. I got some Robitussin cough and chest congestion DM, and its helping with the cough. Now it seems like its mostly a nasal drip that is constant. My oxygen level etc. has been good. Just cannot figure out what is going on. I keep thinking its allergies which I suffer with all the time anyhow. I am taking my last Prednisone tonight. Doctor only prescribed it for 5 days low dose of only 10mg. My chest x-ray showed that I have trapped mucus behind the lung and diaphragm after having a bad Bacterial Infection. I do find relief with some Hot Tea with Honey also. Not sure what I will do next to get relief. Thanking Everyone for their advice.
With persistent symptoms, it might be good to see a pulmonologist, who can really take a good look at what is going on in your lungs. Mucus typically stays inside the lungs, if it is escaping there could be a serious issue. Additional images like a CT might be needed.
Also, when you do not bring up the mucus, there are techniques that you can learn to do it - again the pulmonologist is the place to begin.
Seven different interventions! Now you're better, Thank Goodness! But don't have any idea which intervention worked. That was a mighty expensive work-up. I am very adverse to new drug regimes particularly multiple at one time......just keep it simple! Should have started with a chest x-ray
To hazard my best guess, I would say that the prednisone and the NeilMed nasal rinse would be what I would start with, should I ever run into such a persistent nagging cough again. I would also reduce the prednisone intake significantly from day one. That's just me being me.
