This will be a trial, and you must have the support of your health care professionals, especially the prescriber {!!}, but the idea is to not make large changes. If your dose is 100 mg, you start the trial by taking 75 each day for at least two full weeks (not six days, not 10...). Then, down to 50 for two weeks. This is now a full month at a substantially reduced dose, even if it is a tapering dose. You may know by then if you can go off it at all. Then to 25 mg for two weeks, then 12.5 mg for two weeks, then nada. Hopefully, that longer taper will have you off it and none the worse for wear.
This is what I...moi,,.this guy...would do. Again, with the sensible agreement of my GP or cardiologist...only. You might get some people with actual experience replying, so don't run off and begin my suggested protocol...not yet.
I am not a doc. But I have tapered off two meds in the past that I was told I needed to take til doomsday. One comment said to taper from 100 to 75 mg. I don't know if they are pills or capsules, and I AM NOT TELLING YOU WHAT TO DO, only what I would do. I would decrease the quantity, by taking a small sliver off, or a bit less in the capsule for a couple of days. And keep doing until not taking. No cold turkey, slowly. And I PERSONALLY would not be consulting the doc that gave them to me. I would just do it. BUT THE DECISION IS YOURS.
You live in your body, and no one know better than you to speed to do it. Vegetarians who do not eat meat and animal products, do not have HBP. I eat a little chicken and some dairy, but not much and my blood pressure is if anything, too low.
Regarding your AFIB, are you drinking or drinking ANYTHING with caffeine? Coffee, tea, cola, Mountain Dew which has more caffeine than colas, chocolate? If so, quit them, and you may find that your AFIB is gone. That is the case with me.
Let us know what you do and hopefully good results.
Regarding your other meds for HBP,
Took it about 4 months. It was destroying my kidneys. EGFR went from 83 to 54 after taking that short of time. I just stopped it and told my EP. Two months later I just tested again and EGFR is 74 now. I am going for an ablation in October. Hope it we works as I don't want to take another dangerous pill.
Hello @bama921, I combined your discussion with your first discussion on weaning off of multaq, "Has anyone weaned off multaq after 15 days?" - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/has-anyone-weaned-off-multaq-after-15-days/ so members could see your update.
I don’t know about tapering off Multaq but it was the scariest med I’ve ever taken. I took it for 3 days for afib before stopping. Trouble started day 1 and the entire time I had all the symptoms of a heart attack and felt like I was going to collapse. Even after stopping, I had weakness, fatigue and dizziness for the next 3 months.
Sorry you’re having issues as well. Call your cardiologist ASAP.
