Anyone wake feeling exhausted after seemingly dreaming all night

Posted by mazeppabob @mazeppabob, Jul 26, 2022

I never wake refreshed/rested. It has been like this for as long as I can remember and I am 77 now,
My sleep medicine DR called it EPIC dreaming. A rare disorder with no known cause or treatment. His only suggestion was to prescribe Modafinil (a stimulant) taken in the morning to perk me up.
I have tried CPAP and other meds to no avail.
I wonder if this is really that rare.

I also have constant vivid dreams as I have fibro and PTSD. With fibro a person stays in Rem and doesn't fall into the deeper levels of sleep. I was also told it may be due to my personality. I gave up sugar which has helped as well as long walks in nature to calm me. I don't set an alarm as I I plan on sleeping longer than 8 hours. Therapy helps a lot.

I am 68 years old and have had sleep issues and headaches for many years. My family doctor also happens to be a specialist in sleep disorders, so together we've figured out how to help me.

One often-overlooked reason for intense/often disturbing dreaming is going to bed on a full stomach, or having eaten too much during the day. I have found, over the years, that staying away from all food after 7 PM, affords me restful sleep. If I have eaten too much or too late the night before, I have both vivid dreams and often wake up with a headache.

And one more issue: neck pain/sensitivity often causes headaches upon awakening. Gentle stretches upon awakening, together with a cup of coffee, often helps. Good luck.

That's very interesting and I am going to try this approach. I ate supper late (after 8 p.m.) last night and my dreams were so intense that I stayed in bed until 10 a.m. to recover. I'm still tired from all the nighttime activity in my dreams. I've never done a sleep study or seen a doctor about my vivid dreams but maybe that's an option too. Sometimes I think my dreams could be a mini-series on TV!

Yes, that describe me exactly.
I wake up feeling like I never slept, and can’t wait to take a nap.
I don’t talk about it to people bc no one wants to continuously hear how tired I am.
Family joke about me taking a daily nap,it’s embarrassing, but the tiredness is overwhelming.
Dr:(🙁) no help, only labs…,if nothing shows up on labs, doctor doesn’t know what to tell me.
Today is the first time I’ve researched it; I’m so glad to know that I’m not alone, and there’s actually a name for it.

Same here. I don't wake up in the morning, I get up. I've often joked about my vivid imagination in my dreams and how rich I'd be if I had that imagination while awake. But it's physically and mentally exhausting. I eat like a horse but burn it all off at night in my dreams, as well as all the tossing and turning. I'm 69, and now having heart irregularities so I'm getting more serious about dealing with the sleep problems. Taking Dayvigo and Zopiclone together, finally getting sleep. Dreams are exhausting!

@mazeppabob I'm the only person I have ever met with this condition. I'm 47 and have had it my entire life. I can tell you about dreams I had going back to the age of 4. I sometimes remember them better than reality. I also sleep 10+ hours a night and have just dealt w the exhaustion. I know how horrible it is, but I'm also relieved to hear that it's not just me. 🙃

I live close to Rochester Mayo clinic and asked for a referral to Mayo sleep medicine I spent probably an hour with a sleep psychiatrist explaining symptoms, diagnosis and meds tried. After all that he said well you have already done everything that he would suggest and that was it.
My whole point in asking the question is to see if dreaming disorders are really that rare, unreported or misdiagnosed. Maybe chronic fatigue syndrome is a sleep disorder?

I have chronic fatigue syndrome. I have also always dreamt - all of my life. I can tap into dreams I have had and almost play them on a loop. My recurring theme is travel, I’m late or can’t reach the plane because suddenly I don’t have the right luggage packed and need to shop at the airport, or I’m at the hotel packing to go home and everyone else is packed and gone and my stuff gets more and more. I suspect this theme does come from stress - it isn’t every night. I can remember my dreams last night like watching a film.
I wake exhausted every single day. Sometimes more than others. I do take Modafinil!! I couldn’t function without it.
I dream when I take a day nap. But day naps are more peaceful. Blissful even.
It affects my life.
My female family are all vivid dreamers. I think it’s genetic too.
I came here looking for answers as to why dreams exhaust me so badly - I’m 52 don’t know why I haven’t googled before!!
Pneumonia triggered my chronic fatigue syndrome- maybe I was destined for it as functioning exhaustion from dreaming has been my life!

Me too!! I have just replied to the OP.
I’m exhausted this morning from a night of dreams and can play my dreams going back years if I tap into one - they are like movies I’ve watched.
I have chronic fatigue syndrome…..
I feel your pain. I’m 52

Has anyone done an overnight sleep study?

I did and it answered the question why do I wake up tired, and spend the entire day struggling to stay awake.

I have idiopathic hypersomnia. It’s also referred to as Narcolepsy 2. I take medicine early in the morning that sorta keeps me alert all day.

The term "Epic Dreaming" makes so much sense, as that is what these incredible dreams feel like. For years, I dreamed of things like falling off a cliff or a high wall, of being chased, etc. I'm 74, and now my dreams range from searching for something, often through some very frightening settings...my purse, my car, my keys, a person, etc...to doing something I've never done before...like swimming around a huge pond for hours (in real life, I can't swim.) Other times, I'm in a familiar building or place, and I start to wander until it stops feeling familiar and starts feeling terrifying, and I am always going DOWN stairs instead of up, and I often end up in some industrial setting with huge loud machines or a network of streets that keep taking me back to the same place, but I have NO idea of how to get out or back to where I started from. Some of these dreams are SO vivid and so intense in how much of a toll they take on me that I wake up exhausted as though they really happened. I am at least relieved to learn that I am not alone in this phenomenon, and it's wonderful to be able to share this with others who totally get it!
