Stage 3 Kidney Disease and Diet: What can I eat?
It seems there is very little you can eat that is healthy for the Kidneys. The web site Davida has plenty of food on it but contradicts what other sources say. Anyone know anything for breakfast, lunch and dinner that does not have any sugar or flour bodies the obvious boring or bland foods good for Kidneys and I’m allergic to sugar of any kind of sweetener and flour. Thank you.

I really am happy that you got such good results. I am working on reducing the meat, and increasing plant based.
There are a lot of good things you can eat. I was just at the Mayo a week ago and one of the diagnoses I received was stage 4 CKD. They referred me to meet with a dietitian who provided a meal plan for me as well as provided materials (general) to assist me. I also am working with a dietitian at home to assist me. They recommend the Mediterranean diet and other similar type meal plans. My dietitian took the meal plan provided to me and tweaked it based on things I’m allowed to eat and also enjoy. She wants to try to help me still love food.
I hope I am at 56 when I am 76!
A good dietician or nutritionist is worth their weight in gold. Especially if you have several conditions that you are trying to eat healthy for and balance. These providers can help you customize a plan to meet your needs and tastes.
I’m seeking info on stage 3 and the options for 87 year old with CHF. It’s my dad. We have a follow up appointment in a couple of months.
@celia16 You will find lots of good information here on this thread of discussion. We have found, as kidney disease patients, that diet plays a critical role in daily maintenance of our situation.
One of the first things is to understand what the cause of your dad's kidney disease may be. Uncontrolled high blood pressure or diabetes can be the two main causes. Other causes can be long term medication side effects, lifestyle, or hereditary issues. It's important the root cause also be addressed.
The basic renal diet focuses on limited or no over-processed foods, monitoring sodium/phosphorous/potassium/calcium contents in food. Good hydration, moderate exercise, and stress reduction are also good goals!

I appreciate that. Thank you for the info.
My dad’s is likely due to long standing heart disease and all the meds he has taken for almost 25 years. We try to watch his diet, but at 87, he likes certain treats. Overall, diet not bad. BP is very low. But, doctor says stay on small med. Trying to reduce some of the meds though. Palliative care is what we are choosing at this point. We’ll discuss it further at next appointment. I’m just trying to learn all I can.
@celia16 I had to laugh. My dad was the same, certain treats, no matter! My mother, too, as doctors regulated her diabetes med around her addiction to Hershey's milk chocolate bars with almonds.
Reducing meds when possible is always a great idea, no matter the situation. Your dad's main practice may have access to palliative care resources for you to research. Here is a discussion on palliative care from our cancer support group: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/choosing-palliative-care-what-is-your-experience/ And from our chronic pain support group is their palliative care discussion: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/does-anyone-have-experience-with-palliative-care/
I think that good cardiac diets and renal diets may be close in their scope. It's not unusual for long term side effects from medications to be downplayed in exchange for results. That's how it was with my cousin's kidney disease.

Thanks for this...it is encouraging as I find it confusing being pre-predibetic and CKDstage 3b....at the same time and very low BP. Wish there were a clear combined diet I could follow without having to think too much bout it...and just eliminate the bad food. My doc suggested Metformin at that time but I decided against it because it is contraindicated for Kidney Disease... The Nephrologist I spoke to in 2020 said a diet really wouldn't help...that my kidneys would naturally decline over time because of my age(81 at that time)!! I am determined to prove him wrong..my GP at my last appt said I didn't need to see a new Nephrologist...so am feeling a bit at a loss and angry that maybe following my strict diet has been waste of time and enjoyment. I know we all must die but at least I want to keep on painting until I do and I don't want to end up on dialysis. Sorry if am out 'grabing' too much.
@fromthehill Diets are a challenge, given the different things we need to be aware of for different conditions. I often tell people I can have apples, oatmeal, and cardboard! Never discount eating healthy, and feeling good. Following a sound renal diet kept my kidney function up for more than 10 years, and even though the doctors said there was no need to restrict myself the way I did, I did. It's a small price to pay for having some control over your health situation.
Moderate and comfortable exercise, along with a sound diet for your lifestyle, is definitely something to aim for. As kidney patients, we know all too well about how a little change can make a difference in how we feel. It's okay to splurge once in a while, but then get back on track. Once every couple of months I have a milkshake, child size. It is a treat or reward, but I know that later I am going to perhaps feel bloated. But it sure tastes good going down!
Connect is a great place to express yourself. So, no, you're not "grabbing" too much!
