Looking to understand

Hi there. Im a mom of a 20yo MtF college student who has been on HRT for a year now. I have so many questions and concerns as a mom. I don't want any harm to come to my child and this HRT scares me. So many things can go wrong. Anyone with reasonable reassurance and help to understand? 😊 TIA

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the LGBTQIA Health Support Group.

Have you talked extensively to your child about this? is this gender identity something that your child has always seemed to identify with or has it been more abrupt and quickly changing? I am sure it would help to get counseling together to find out what your child thinks and feels and it would help them open up more probably, and maybe that would give insight that addresses some of your questions. Regarding actually fully transitioning surgically, infertility is almost sure. HRT alone wont necessarily create infertility, but in chronic use/therapy it definitely does increase the risk of infertility in a person born male as estrogen will eventually impair spermatogenesis after years of hormone therapy. It can be reversible the younger that you are as well.

Speaking from experience, my first question is if your child is seeing 1. Therapist and 2. a WPATH certified primary care physician. A qualified therapist who works specifically with the LGBTQIA community is incredibly helpful - for you child, and maybe for you as well. Some even specialize with family counseling as well. A WPATH certified primary care physician is essential if any body modification is in the planning, including HRT, as well as surgical procedures. Though some physical results are reversible, not all are (e.g., breast development typically remains). There are a number of private social media sites that are aimed a parents just like you. You might want to check some out. Finally, I can wholeheartedly recommend a book you and your child might find helpful: The Reflective Workbook for the Partners of Transgender People, by D. M. Maynard. My wife and I found it to be full of insights that helped us better understand the transition I'm going through. You sound like an ally; everyone needs an ally in transition. Be the best one you can be, dear.

Transitioning… hrt… saved my life. Life actually feels good now. I take a weekly injection of estrogen that I administer myself, along with nightly progesterone pills. So many changes… and love 💕 them all. One unexpected but very nice change…. Progesterone rewires your brain. Changes how you think, react… everything. I call it my super power. I know both male and female perspectives, desires, etc… I have an incredible B.S. detector now. Lol

Meant to say that estrogen rewires the brain. Progesterone helps breast/ nipple development as well as heart ❤️ and bone health. Im told that progesterone should start at least a year after estrogen…

That's the amazing thing about organic chemistry. The hormones have a wide-ranging impact on the human body. I'm constantly surprised at my changes in thinking and processing information. Since adding progesterone back in April, I've noticed a very pleasant calming effect rather than the anxiety that would surface from time to time. Estrogen has clearly had an impact, resulting in an emotional and mental clarity that had escaped me all these years. Though the primary goal of the progesterone was enhanced breast development, the calming nature is a wonderful side benefit.
