Posted by terridrag @terridrag, Jan 23, 2019

Getting very frustrated one more day on vancomycin and still having stomach pain extreme bloating and lots of rumbling in my belly I pray that it’s caused by the meds I am taking 3 Florastor a day I’m so over this I quit smoking 6 months ago I figured I would be healthier 😩

While taking Vancomycin for C Diff, is it necessary to avoid dairy products (like yogurt), alcohol and caffeine?
I understand alcohol and caffeine may contribute to dehydration, but do they interfere with the medication, making it less effective? Or cause other unwanted side effects?

Hello @btc46 and welcome to Mayo Connect. Thinking about side effects and interactions of a new medication is always a good idea. The best way to consider side effects and interactions is to talk with your doctor or your pharmacist. Pharmacists are a great resource to answer your questions about any medication you are taking.

With that said, here is information from WebMD regarding Vancomycin. You can click on the link and get information on side effects as well as interactions.

Started Vincomycin two days ago—for the second time. Finished my first 10 day cycle a little over a week ago, and the C diff returned within 10 days. So starting over.
I’m hoping to learn from others here how to get rid of it this time around. I’m doing all the things that are recommended, and did many of them before ever having C diff. Very frustrating.

@btc46 In 2018 I got cdiff from clindamycin. I spent 8 days in the hospital. I came home still very ill. This was in September. I had 4 rounds of vancomycin which did nothing. After 6 months of being ill, I got an fmt (fecal microbiome transplant). I believe it saved my life. I believe there's a treatment called deficid which works well. That wasn't around when I was sick. I think there's other treatments now. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. All I can tell you is I take probiotics every day and I am very careful when I need an antibiotic. Wish you the best.

Have you been fine since the FMT? May I ask which probiotics you are taking? I am completely overwhelmed by the choices and no one seems to agree on which ones to take for C. Diff recovery.

My doctor 1st prescribed Dificid, which I read has a better rate of non-recurrence. My insurance did not cover it at the time, so doctor prescribed vancomycin. If I have a recurrence I will request the Dificid or look into FMT or Rebyota treatment.

@btc46 So far, so good. I take 2 different probiotics. I take saccharomyces boulardii and visbiome. I alternate them, taking 1 one day and the other the next day. I only take 1 per day. Visbiome is expensive. The other one is a lot cheaper. You may have to try some others. But this is what I use.
