Prolia and Hair Loss

I was on Prolia for 3.5 years. I started noticing hair loss after a couple of shots but I wrote it off to just getting older. Since I had very thick hair I didn't really worry until my shower drain stopped up and the plumber commented that he "pulled a pony tail" out of the drain. Our house was only 3 years old and I had never lost enough hair to stop up a shower drain anywhere I had lived. By the time I stopped Prolia my hair was noticeably thin. I made an appointment to discuss hair loss with the prescribing physician (at a major national hospital) and was told hair loss was not a side effect of Prolia. At that appointment I decided to stop Prolia and was educated on the process. It was also suggested I see a dermatologist for the hair loss. I've been through multiple rounds of scalp steroid injections, a dozen different medications and I am still losing hair. Current thoughts are that after several years on Prolia it triggered an autoimmune response which has resulted in a scarring alopecia. Perhaps an unfortunate combination of Prolia and my genetics? My hair will not grow back. Be careful.

I have posted in past threads about Prolia and hair loss. I called Amgen to inquire and was told that hair loss was not reported during clinical trials, but was after product went to market. Hair loss does not happen to everyone, but how does one know if that outcome will be a side effect?

Best wishes,
Cindy

I am so sorry to hear of your issues.
It sounds very familiar. My endocrinologist also has been no help with hair loss. I called Prolia to discuss side effects and the pharmacist also claimed it was not a side effect.

I am in the process of trying to determine what I can do about my massive hair loss after 3 shots. I also see a regenerative doctor who ordered extensive blood work which included the drawing of 25 tubes of blood. Most results have been close to the normal range except for the Human Transforming Growth Factor Beta 1 (TGF-b1). First time I have ever had this test--didn't even know what it was. My results are over 10X the high normal range. Dr. said TGF is an inflammatory marker and an indication there is inflammation in the body. Have to find out why?
I have quite a few of the side effects from high TGF-b1. Now I have to find out what toxin is causing it, (Ex: Enviromental Factors (mold etc), Metals, Cancer, or the Prolia)??? I am having an environmental. metal, and mycotoxins test done this week (will take several weeks for results to come in). We also have an inspector coming to our home to test for mold, etc. (Will also take a couple weeks for results). (And of course, all these costs are out of pocket, insurance doesn't pay for it.)
The way my hair is falling out, it will be visible to others shortly (already is to me). I have been researching wigs and figure I better go for a consultation before it is too visible.

I had my 3rd Prolia shot in April 2024, so it will be in my system through at least October.

May I ask what medicine you started taking to help with the Prolia rebound loss? I will have to make that decision by October. I will Not take Prolia again!!!

Sorry for being so lengthy, but since hair loss is a lot of times a result of inflammation, I thought maybe this blood test could be helpful to the group. I am just learning about this myself.

Wishing everyone the best and appreciate you sharing information on this website.
