Finasteride tablets for hair loss
Last year I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Since then I’ve had severe hair loss. I’ve tried what feels like everything but I keep losing my hair. Recently my dermatologist prescribed my Finasteride for hair loss. She told my it’s given to men but since I’ve had a hysterectomy it would be safe to take. I’ve done some reading on it and it’s a little concerning. Has any other women tried this and did it help? I’m 2 months in and still losing hair. It said it could take 3 months for men to see a change.

I asked my dermatologist about this and she said we should wait. Not sure why. Are you sure why you had hair loss? I ask because I thought I knew why I had it too, but then I discovered it could be due to something else.
I have hypothyroidism too. But, my levels are good and have been for years. I also have post covid syndrome, which also can cause hair loss. I lost a large amount of weight and that was initially thought to be the cause. And, I was also diagnosed with vitamin B12 deficiency, which is now thought to be the most likely culprit. Do you have splitting nails with ridges and holes? I did. After proper treatment, my nails are now very healthy. My hair is no longer shedding either. I actually have new growth, but I suspect that it’s due to the daily Minoxidil that I take. I have new growth on my scalp and body.
My hair loss and other symptoms started right before I was diagnosed for hypothyroidism. My levels have been good for over a year now but I have not stopped losing hair. I have addressed vitamin anemia to my doctor but they don’t seem concerned due to my iron levels are fine (though my B12 is on the low side) I take vitamins and HairlaVive (it’s a hair loss medicine) plus I use Keranique shampoo/conditioner and their nightly scalp regimen.
My nails look great and I have hair growth but I am losing more than I’m gaining. Like bald patches are forming.
The minoxidil, is that a tablet or a serum? I may have to try it. I’m desperate.
You can get it in foam to apply locally OTC (basically Rogain) you apply to the scalp or the pills. I take a daily tiny dose, I will likely increase it soon. It’s basically 1/4 of a pill.
Mine is prescription from my dermatologist. It’s from a specialty pharmacy that mails it to me for a very low price. You have to take it daily. And, the theory is you must take it indefinitely, which is ok with me if it helps me keep my hair.
I’m not sure if the B12 will completely reverse and I won’t need the Minoxidil of not. Will figure it out down the road.
I did read that timing is important, so I’d try to start it asap if your doctor approves it. I’d also try to find a dermatologist or hair loss specialist to figure out exactly what is causing it. I wish you luck!
Is there an update? I'm 87 years old, female, diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (54 gfr), low thyroid (Liothyronine (5 mcg), high blood pressure (losartan 100 mg), DHEA (25 mg), probiotics (2 caps daily), collagen (dissolved in water), just started Jardiance (replacing Furosemide and potassium as Jardiance does not affect kidneys), Quetiapine (25 mg for sleep). I'm losing my hair to the point I will be bald soon if I can't change it. I've looked online at the OTC "hair loss" products I see advertised and it does not appear they work well if at all. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks.
Can you provide any info on specialty pharmacy? Like where or how I could contact them. Thanks.
It’s called Skin Medicinals. You will need a prescription. I pay out of pocket not using my insurance, but the cost is very low. It’s sent by mail.
Thanks. Appreciate your response.
I had an episode about 1.5 yrs ago of my hair shedding to the point I thought I was going to go bald as well. My levels of hormones were great , we lowered my thyroid some as we run my TSH almost non existent related to thyroid cancer. I started a supplement called Nutrafol 4 pills a day. My hair is much much thicker, now curly, and not near as coarse as it used to be I wish you all luck it is a very stressful thing.
i tried minoxidil foam for years with very little sucess. i now take the monoxidil pill 2,5 and it is much better and cheaqper than the foam. it does make your hair very thik. good luck.
I’m now getting my Minoxidil through my regular pharmacy.
