Ablative treatments use extreme heat or cold or other methods to destroy (ablate) prostate tissue, rather than removing it with surgery or treating it with radiation. Other types of ablative therapies include high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), photodynamic therapy (PDT) and focal laser ablation (FLA).
RJCoach, has cryotherapy been recommended for you or are you researching options?
Hello - I am considering treatment options for my newly diagnosed prostate cancer. One urologist in Canada is recommending that I am a good candidate for cryoablation. This is because my tumor is contained in the prostate with no extensions. Grade 2, Gleason 3+4=7. I am interested to know if anyone has received cryoablation as a first treatment. If so, what were the side effects of ED and incontinence like and did they subside? Thank you.

Hi Colleen, Thank you for reaching out. I have not decided on my treatment yet. I am getting a PSMA-Pet scan on Sept 17 then once the results are reviewed, we will see. Right now I am a candidate for focal therapy and that is why I was looking at either laser or cryotherapy. Unfortunately, I have gotten zero responses on people commenting on receiving cryotherapy. I am currently still a candidate for surgery but would prefer not to go with that option. I had another PSA test done last week and my PSA is now 20.2 up from 18.1 which was 3-1/2 months ago. Still a 3+3, grade 2, MRI says contained but we are anxious to see what the PSMA-Pet scan says. If you have any info on anyone who receive cryo, I would love to hear. Any comments, always appreciated. Thanks so much.

Hi Embee. I didn't have Cryotherapy, but a RALP. However, my friend had the seeds implants, but after 2 years his PSA started rising again. Surgery not an option, so he had Cryotherapy. That was a year ago and PSA normal again. He said Cryotherapy was less invasive than the seeds. My Urologist never suggested Cryotherapy and I know no one who has used as first treatment. I'm not sure why that is. Sorry I can't be more helpful. I'd discuss Cryotherapy with your Urologist, surgeon, and Oncologist as you should be talking to all three before making a decision.
Was cryoblation your first treatment? How long ago did you have it done? What was your gleason score going into it? My urologist is recommending it for me. My Gleason is 3+4 and PSA 20.2 now. They are doing a PSMA-Pet scan first just to ensure it has not metastasized. Sorry for all the questions - I have just heard from so few people who have had cryo.
Hi @rjcoach1951, as you know cryotherapy, also called cryoblation, for prostate cancer is a procedure to freeze prostate tissue and cause the cancer cells to die. Here's more info from Mayo Clinic

@embee992, fellow member @rjcoach1951 asked a similar question here:
- Anyone choose cryotherapy for prostate cancer?

What did you decide?

I had TULSA Pro ablation in July. Full report under this thread:
Tulsa Pro Experience, Mayo Clinic MN – July 2024
My doctor planned to use cryotherapy if he ran into any calcifications (wasn’t needed). I have had zero side effects.
I chose Cryoblation. So far everything is good. Psa went from 16 to 1.3. Mayo Jacksonville.
Yes. If that is Cryoblation of freezing. I had one small spot on the prostate.
