Glucose becoming more elevated

Posted by brotherchuckles80 @brotherchuckles80, Aug 4 8:35pm

Hi There!
I am 80 years old and have been a Type II diabetic for 37 years. My glucose had ben under control up until June of this year. It has begun rising. It is now in the 300-500 range. My diet remains at about 200 carbs per day, which I have been at for about the past 5 years. I am on a Trulicity 3mg/0.5ml pen, one time per week and I take 1000 mg of Metformin in the evening one time per day. I am not taking any known med that could raise my glucose level. Anyone else experience this. What was the cause and what did you do about it? Thank you brotherchuckles8- aka Charles

I am happy to tell you and others that my glucose readings were way off. The test strips that I was using were bad. I did a calibration on my meter which tested perfectly. I then opened a new canister of test strips. Walla! A reading of 188. That is high at this time but I know that it will go down. Also deb1997, do you really only take in 50 carbs per day? I am on a strict diet of 45 carbs per meal (3 meal per day) and 18 carb snacks (four times per day. In the past five years I have lost 100+ pounds and maintained my weight of 175 over that same time period. But 50 carbs per day? God bless you. Charles aka brotherchuckles80.

God bless you brother. Glad to hear your test strips were bad.
I try to to keep carbs at 50. My doctor suggested it to lose weight. It’s hard but the less I eat (carbs) the better I feel. I have chronic back pain from messed up back surgery in 2007. The more I weigh the more I hurt. That’s great that you maintain your weight at 175. Keep up the good work. Blessings friend, Deb

Thank you deb1997. May God bless you in your effort. I did it with His grace and you can also. brotherchuckles80 aka Charles

In my opinion you need to cut down on carbs usually less than 50 work and please have your glucometer recalibrated with this high blood glucose you aught to have symptoms

Thank you. I disvovered that the test strips were bad. My number went from 576 down to 118 using new test strips. I am so relieved.

Another thing to keep track of is your insulin (if you use it). I use an insulin pump. The previous time I filled and changed the pod I mistakenly put the vial of insulin in the cupboard with my other supplies, instead of the fridge where I usually keep it. On the next pod change I started running 300 + blood sugar. No amount of correction boluses helped and I was approaching 400. My husband asked if there was something wrong with the pod. Then I remembered I had filled it with warm not fresh insulin. Duh! I ended up wasting part of a vial of insulin. My bad!

@cehunt57 in 30 year my daughter has never refrigerated the vial of insulin currently in use (she is also on the pump).

What can I say? Over 50 years I’ve always kept it refrigerated. Perhaps the difference is that I had a pancreas transplant in 2005. I barely use any insulin in the pump. The minimum is 85 units for 3 days. I average about 100 - 120 units for 3 days. One vial of insulin lasts a looooong time. So I try to keep it as fresh as possible.

@cehunt57 I Just didn't want anyone who handles insulin the way my daughter does, to be alarmed. It does sound like you are a special case. My daughter is very responsible and has excellent control and has never had a problem with insulin. She doesn't use a lot but probably less than you!

Of course with the summer we have had in the Northeast this year, maybe she is keeping it cool 🙂

When you go out for the day, do you keep the insulin in a cool pack?

No; the day’s (3 days actually) is in the pump pod inserted in my body. The vial of insulin to fill the pods stays in the fridge.
