Total Knee Repair Revision: A Success Story

Posted by ezas123 @ezas123, Aug 4, 2022

Hi all I I am 1 week out of revision today . I must say this recovery has been so different from my first. I have so much more movement in my knee …. My leg goes straight….. my flexion work in progress but I was at .70 right out of surgery ….. I was there a year after tkr…..struggling of course with inflammation which I expected….I am icing and going to my therapist to help with edema…. I started pt this week also so you know how it goes take to where you can than push little more…..the pain really sucks going through this all over again I have not forgot the pain from last time … but the difference is I know I am seeing results already….even with the pain for right now I am so glad I did revision….. good luck to others going through and might be going through this .

Kathyborn, The original poster Ezas can better answer, but revision surgery for any of these joint replacements usually means that something did not go well with the initial replacement, and ortho has to go back in to revise, correct, repair, etc. The same can happen with hip replacement. Of course, it is more "delicate" and challenging to do revision, but thank goodness Ezas's revision surgery turned out better. So happy about that. One other note, if revision surgery is necessary, be sure to select an ortho who specializes in revisions surgery of whatever joint is being operated on. It takes real skill to do this kind of surgery.

A had a revision a year after my replacement because original dr put in knee was two sizes two big . Could not get any flexion original dr also did mua at 6 weeks made it worse …. I was stuck at 65-70 for year I pushed … I got second opinion when dr was telling me it was me not been able to push through it … it was like a brick wall my leg would not go past and felt like there was too much stuffed inside my knee …. Once I got second opinion everything made sense with original x-ray after tkr surgery dr told me was to to big would never get any more flexion….that was it scheduled surgery had to wait one year from first tkr not to hurt surrounding ligaments…. From time I woke up pain was gone was amazing …. I have gotten to 105 flexion i can do most things ….i still get stiff and sore I had to slow down at the gym my other knee is the issue now but I am not having it done ….i have stretch routine now I miss the gym though lol ….but if you have any question be happy to answer if I can …. Good luck to you …. Let me say I feel tkr is last resort exhaust all other options …sounds like you are doing your research and that is the first thing …..you will read so much don’t get me wrong tkr goes great for a lot of people I thought I be back to work in 6 weeks lol …. But for me did not work out…. But you should have exercise program now building up those muscles in your legs …. It will help as you go through the process does wonders for your recovery……I know your in pain but you will be after tkr so have push through some of it and just ice ….good luck

I am from northeast Pennsylvania Wilkes-Barre area to be precise my dr was dr Kolesar he and his team are amazing …. It’s hard enough having to go through tkr for second time than you have dr that won’t even see you because another dr worked on you …..he was straight up with me told me I would always have some degree of stiffness because of scar tissue and the trauma my knee endured for that year ….. .anything else let me know

Thanks for the information. Again, I am so happy for your success. I live in Texas and have to wait until I have reached the one year make before anything can be done. I am thinking I should go back to the doctor that did my TKR. I have found some good exercises for the knee on Youtube. ..

Great post. Going through all of your issues, except no word on whether replacement is too large. Only that scar tissue so severe a revision debridement is scheduled 8 months post TKR. Pondering decision to do so, even though told it is my only option for any improved ROM.
Was a healthy, physically active and strong 74 year old prior to surgery. As you said, some people have no post op issues. So basically it’s a blind toss up to have TKR.

8 months post should not cause you to have revision for scar tissue…. If you are speaking to dr who did original surgery I would be suspicious…I mean I can’t say for sure I am not dr but all my research with people with scar issues they would just go in and clean it up …not replace the knee does not add up …. I am very suspicious… hope you found someone for second opinion … I could not with all confidence let same surgeon operate on me after tkr failure at 8 months … I hope you think about this
