@jackiie Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! as you can see, you're certainly not alone in having a gout attack. How well I recall my first attack! Like many others, it came on suddenly. Since then I have been on allopurinol 100 mg once a day. I stay away from pork/pork products, shellfish, purines [sure do miss mushrooms!], alcoholic beverages, and a lot of red meat. It seems each person will find the best combination of what works for them.
Hi, my husband has had gout for 20 years, diet changes were not enough as it was inherited. He tried allpurinol and colchicine, but was allergic to the fillers. These days he drinks tart cherry juice 4 ounces 2 to 3 times a day as soon as symptoms appear. Attack is usually gone in 2-3 days. Make sure the drink is pure juice and not a diluted down beverage.
I buy organic Tart Cherry Juice from our local Natural Grocers, yes it costs about $10, but so much better than taking pills that have side effects daily trying to prevent an attack.
Hi. I have not been diagnosed with gout but my father had it. I have 2 kinds of arthritis & my uric acid levels are elevated. I tried tart cherry juice but could not drink it as I found it sweet. I switched over to tart cherry capsules I buy on Amazon. Started off with 1 capsule & it took my uric acid from 7.6 to 6.8. So now I take 2 capsules & will get my labs done this week. Hopefully it’s better than 6.8.
Otherwise I may have to take meds like allopurinol. 🙏
I had attack in right ankle 15 years ago. Dr. gave me shot of cortisone in ankle. Pain almost immediately was gone. He put me on allopurinol pills. Two every evening and cut down on red meat and wine. I am pain free now!! I strongly advise you to do same. Good Luck!
I have had way too many gout attacks take tart cherry capsules allopurinol (NSAIDs, voltaren, and for a while colchicine, during flares, ) Still not under control asked to see a nutritionist who gave me a two page diet with foods high, moderate and low purine. Since I have followed that diet have not had a flare. However 4 years later my blood uric acid level is above normal so dr is increasing my allopurinol. Think it’s due to having occasional shrimp and scallops as well as trout. Guess I’m not one that can have little bits from time to time. There are meats , fishes, and vegetables on the do not eat list to name a few. Good luck
Its something one inherits. (one CAN inherit) only thing was mine came on at 42 and my dad's came on at 82!
I used to go to the ER for a Demerol injection. It was ecruciating!!!
My dad was on allopurinol like the others.
my average attacked PEAKED at 24-48 hours and completed after 72 hours.
One day, I found a natural remedy site and took away that apple cider vinegar (ACV,) some lemon water, and black cherry juice (BCJ) helped others.
So - next time I had an attack I made a concoction with 2 tablespoons ACV, lemon or orange juice, a 1/3 cup BCJ in a 32 ounce container and filled the rest up with water, soda (sugar-free like sprite or 7 up). It doesn't have to be exact. Just limit the ACV because its really acidic and tangs! I sipped it while the gout pain began increasing.
After 2 hours the pain started subsiding!!! After a few years, I never had another gout attack. I began using my concoction as a joint juice for my bad arthritis days. I've been told I should market it. 😉 I always keep black cherry (knudsen - pure) and ACV in the house. I can fudge on the other stuff.
DCJ and ACV I get at the health food stores and I've not had a gout attack in 15 years.
What the concoction does is keep my body in an alkaline state. When stress and foods make your body acidic "bam" you get an attack. Moderate your food habits to keep the purines low - but honestly, as long as I keep my stress low, flush plenty of fluids (what older people don't do enough of!) and eat moderately I'm gout free.

Gout can run in families (I have family members that battle it) and so I do believe it's hereditary. Gout is a form of arthritis and is very painful. High uric acid levels go along with gout. Culprits can be shellfish, pork, meats with organ meat such as hot dogs, vienna sausages and spam. Also, for some, orange juice can be a culprit.
The gold medication for gout is daily 1-2 Allopurinol and for flare-ups, Colchicine. Colchicine is to be taken every hour on the hour until diarrhea starts...then stop taking it.
Tart cherry juice helps some people if it is drank daily to relieve the gout. Also, stay hydrated.
Blessings & Prayers to all of you battling this malady.
Yes, the pain has mostly stopped. Thanks for asking.
Hello. May I ask where you purchase your tart cherry juice from ?
