AREDS 2 and side effects

My eye doctor recommended Areds2 for preventing further macular degeneration. I ordered the Bausch and Lomb brand and took one with my breakfast. I had stomach pain and a little nausea for the next two days. I am all for prevention of retina problems especially with a supplement, but this was more discomfort than I care to have. I am wondering what is in this product that causes this problem. I never have stomach aching like this unless I have an intestinal virus or food poisoning.

The B&L Preservision has far too much Zinc and Vitamin E. I believe it is especially problematic if one also takes a multivitamin which also contains the vitamins/minerals that are in the AREDS. Quite frankly, it causes an over dose situation. Also, if one takes other individual vitamins/minerals one has to cross check those with the AREDS.

I recommend that you read this whole thread. There is a lot of good information in it that will help you make a decision as to whether you will continue with Preservision or not, or indeed, any AREDS product.

I made the personal decision to discontinue taking any due to the debilitating intestinal problems that it caused, which continued to worsen over the years, but stopped as soon as I stopped taking the AREDS. It has been a year and a half since I stopped taking them and I have had no change in my AMD.

It's the zinc oxide that causes the problem. The dose is too high and it is a cheap form of oxide which is hard to digest.
