As someone who has had retinal holes and tears in their past, if you see a sudden increase in floaters, not just a few which is quite common when one ages, but a marked increase, then if I couldn't get into to see an opthalmologist right away, I would go to a hospital ER department.

Retinal tears can lead to retinal detachments which is a medical emergency.

Not to frighten you but if it's marked increase in floaters, it needs to be checked out asap. Other signs of a potential detachment is if you experience 'flashing lights' or what appears to be a curtain falling over part of your vision - a medical emergency - don't wait for an appointment - go to an ER department - you will likely be triaged right away.
