Hi, here's my experience with arthritis. I'm 76 and have mild symptoms in hands, thumbs etc.
I find diet plays a big part in my case. To minimize pain, I cannot eat the night shade foods: tomato, green/red peppers, egg plant, potatoes. I also minimize sugar and wheat. This does help me, and yes, I love these foods, but prefer less pain. Also, therapeutic massage helps move body fluids and loosens tissues, this helps me alot. I have my husband work on me weekly and get a professional massage about once a month. It's cheaper than meds and surgery. Also, exercise and yoga stretches helps. Maintaining movement, dancing, at home with some old favorite songs. Forgiveness of others since stiffness can represent holding onto anger. We can do much to support ourselves. Always prayer.

Ah, an old blast from the past which needs updating.

I haven't yet had the spurs removed from the right shoulder yet - waiting for my wife to recover from her back fusion surgery. The left is better now, but the pain wasn't eliminated and those spurs do grow back.

Meanwhile, I have been diagnosed with a spinal arthritis and degenerating disk disease from top to bottom of the spine, include a misaligned disk that is pressing on a nerve causing more pain. Just got a cortisone injection in the inflamed areas two days ago. I also have a hip that needs replacing and am working through the protocol that has to be done before the replacement.

Yes, movement and stretching (as recommended by my PT guy) is helpful as is prayer and meditation. Also, use of heat pads and cold packs can be helpful. I do watch my diet, but not so much for arthritis - more for not having a colon post colon cancer - example: low sugar/HFCS intake, reduced fat, etc.

My focus now is trying to improve sleep quality. I can tolerate the pain through the day with moderation of activities, but at night the lack of effective pain control causes a lot of movement and poor quality sleep which causes dementia-like symptoms at times. Some days are better than others which do correlate with sleep duration/quality. I do use a CPAP, but also need decongestants because of allergies blocking the nose.

Family history has a lot of arthritis and cancer, so none of this is a big surprise.

So we're hanging on, doing our best to keep moving and now that the wife is mobile, going after these issues now before I get too old for the necessary procedures.

After her back issues and surgery, I'd consider that a last resort.

Thanks for you comment.
