Knee Hyperextension After TKR

Has anyone who has had TKR experienced a problem with backwards hyperextension of the joint? I had TKR in October 2019. My recovery has been complicated by a sacroiliac joint issue with radiculopathy that has responded to injections and LOTS of PT. However, my knee continues to hyperextend. My ortho X-rays are normal, and the surgeon says sometimes it takes a year, 18 months, 2 years to fully recover. It’s been 3.5 years now and they’re telling me that maybe I need different hardware in the knee. Maybe?? I don’t want another surgery based on a maybe! Has anyone else had to deal with this?

I have no answers yet after 5 years with this. I have been doing PT for about 2 that is helping somewhat, but the knee still snaps back after I’ve walked for awhile. The ortho continues to say the hardware is in good position. Prior to the Jenn replacement, I had surgery for a torn meniscus in that knee - I wonder if that’s a factor. Did any if you have a prior surgery u. The same knee as well?

I did not have a prior surgery on the knee. I am again in PT and really getting an exhausting workout but the knee still hyperextends when I walk. One good thing it is not painful.

I had hyperextended knees all my life and never knew it until my orthopedic surgeon told me after first TKR. He said my knees would look different bc he couldn’t put the new ones in like mine were or they would break. It has been recently been suggested by Mayo drs that I have hEDS. Since having both knees replaced. I’ve had back, hip and foot pain and issues walking very far. It’s like my body doesn’t know what to do with these knees! Anyone else?

I have this. It is scaring me to death. My tkr was 12/2020. I did PT for a full year- 2021. I did 6 months of therapy in 22/23'. Now... back in therapy. Have seen 3 different neurologist and neuromuscular.

Have you had any resolution?

I have an appointment next week with a "revisionist" about my knee for a second opinion. I am still in PT but I can't see how exercise can fix hyperextended knee. I am very upset etc. about this.
I will keep you posted after my visit with the second opinion doctor.

I have an appointment next week with a "revisionist" about my knee for a second opinion. I am still in PT but I can't see how exercise can fix hyperextended knee. I am very upset etc. about this.

I have same situation after TKR. 9 months in I noticed my knee was hyperextending. Surgeon had nothing to say to me other that doing PT and most people can live with it. I plan on going to someone for a second opinion. But what does a reformist mean?

I have same situation after TKR. 9 months in I noticed my knee was hyperextending. Surgeon had nothing to say to me other that doing PT and most people can live with it. I plan on going to someone for a second opinion. But what does a reformist mean?

To Jules 1989. The term that was used by the 2nd opinion doctor's office was "revisionist".
I will post August 2nd after I have had my appointment with the 2nd opinion doctor.

Hello Jules and other "hyper extenders", I had an appointment today with a doctor about having revision surgery and upon further research found I would not be comfortable with him.
Long story short I cancelled the appointment. I found 2 or 3 doctors that have more experience with knee revision surgery and the #1 doctor for a major basketball team. I will be checking them out today. I pray that I will make the right choice.

I am still researching doctors that do revision knee replacement to correct knee hyperextended. The top 2 or 3 doctors that do revisions do not accept Medicare and one requires a fee of $7,900....I shall continue my search.
