To start generic Fosamax soon and very concerned!

Posted by pattitoo @pattitoo, Apr 28, 2019

What can anyone share about their Osteoporosis meds......I have consulted with 2 Orthopods, GP, Dentist and Chiropractor. All feel I should try the med.
I am reluctant for some reason, know several that took one dose of their med and had side affects. I was going to start tomorrow morning, Have some busy weeks, in a quandary to say the least.
All 4 DEXA scans were requested by me, only the last one is in the Osteoporosis level.-- 2019 T SCORE -2.7 --in 2014 was -2.3 (what are Z scores?)
Z scores show also.
Please share your experiences with us if you want, the information will be helpful and appreciated by all..
For several years I have taken Vitamin D and Calcium.
I am almost 77 and live alone.. My weight is good, lost less that one inch in height.
Doing my best to be optimistic.
Thanking each of you for input you care to share.

Did anyone with bad side effects from fosamax stop taking it? How quickly did the side effects ease? I have headaches, back pain and diarrhea. Today should have been my third pill but I'm not taking anymore.

REPLY

I’ve been taking fosomax weekly (mostly) for about three years. I only take a 35 mg pill. My scans are improving a lot. Spine is now osteopenic and slight osteoporsis in one hip. For almost a year I’m doing some good weight training, also, and expect next scan to be good. I have never had a side effect from fosomax. I requested the lower dose after hearing about others’ side effects.

Did your Dr give you any push-back about taking the lower dose? Do you know of any research that indicates how effective this lower dose is, compared to a full dose?

REPLY

Hi - no, he gave no pushback. I weighed 138 at the time, about 5’ 4 1/2”. My sister had a terrible time on it - granted she weighted a lot less, like 105. But I was concerned about bad side effects. It’s working. My scans are much better - more to be revealed in February, when my next scan is.

There are alternatives Algaecal, sesamin, strontium, weight bearing exercise. From a study In Journal of natural medicine. We screened 22 plant extracts for the
promotion of osteoblast diferentiation and mineralization in
MC3T3-E1 cells. Nine extracts showed enhanced ALP activity and mineralization in MC3T3-E1 cells. Furthermore, the
inhibitory efects of these candidates on osteoclast diferentiation were evaluated. The results suggest that D. carota
(No. 8), Vitis. spp. (No. 11), S. veitchii (leaf) (No. 14), E.
polyandra (No. 15), and S. indicum (No. 22) have potential
as efective plant extracts against osteoporosis because they
promote osteoblast diferentiation while inhibiting osteoclast
diferentiation without cell damage. In a future study, we
plan to identify the active components of these plants and
clarify their underlying mechanisms

My sister had to go off of it due to side effects. Doctores love to hand out pills rather than look at alternative to improving bone health.

Yes, they do. But I will say, I did all the “right” things. Was always told by docs by running was great to strengthen bones, I lifted weights more often than not, had enough and not too much calcium in my diet. Genetics are playing a larger part in my health than I anticipated. I suppose if I didn’t do the “right things,” i’d be a mess. I mean, whoever heard of an active vegetarian/vegan runner having high cholesterol 😂. Just glad the meds exist to control what’s off

I've had excellent improvement in dexa scans after taking supplements of AlgaeCal, a plant based calcium formula and doing bone strengthening exercises. Amazon has a very similar formula quite a bit cheaper. Over about 6 years I've gone from osteoporosis to nearly normal bone density! I'm 75.

Hi Criss, Can you tell me the name of the similar supplement on Amazon?
Algae Cal is very expensive.
Thank you.

I take an algae based calcium supplement, New Chapter Bone Strength. A daily serving of 3 pills has 905mg calcium, vitamins D3, K1, K2, magnesium and a trace of Stronium which occurs naturally in the algae. A 40 day supply on Amazon is $40.
