Newly diagnosed with Type II diabetes.........scared and confused

Posted by rubywitch67 @rubywitch67, Feb 26, 2023

I hope someone is out there because I'm REALLY scared and need help to process this. I was just diagnosed three days ago with diabetes and feel totally overwhelmed. I WAS able to talk with a Certified Diabetes and Clinical Education Specialist the next day, but was given so much verbal information I became frantic trying to retain it all. Which I didn't! I was given a very small booklet titled "Introduction to Diabetes," with bits and pieces of information, but it didn't tell me what my next step should be or the one after that. I'm a 71 year old woman and there is no diabetes in my family that I know of. I want to get this into remission and the educator I saw said that was a very reasonable goal considering my numbers. I'm sorry this is so long. Thanks so much. Linda

@bobweller thank you for trying to post “organ transplant immune suppressant medications list”. I am terrible at posting links and I’m not so great at screen shots either.

Just get a test kit from your doctor. It has a meter and strips.
Check strips and the acuecheck meter goes well . You will need lancets to prick a fingertip. Those are not included as part of the meter.
Stick a test strip in the meter with red side up. Prick a fingertip with the finger strip already in the meter When the little blood comes out swipe the blood on the Strip that you have already stuck in the meter and the meter gives you your sugar number high or low or within range. Use once a day if you want to. I do mine right before dinner for a more accurate measurement . Very easy to do and it keeps you from panicking every day
It never goes into remission. It’s with you for life. Just monitor it daily

@andytheman meters are inexpensive but the test strips needed to use them can be expensive. Do a little research into these costs because you will need more test strips than the few that come with the meter. I’m currently using a One Touch Verio Flex meter and my husband found a good deal on the test strips through Amazon. That reminds me the meter must have compatible test strips to use with it. There is no such thing as universal test strips for all types of meters (TOO BAD!). Most meters come with some lancets and some even have a lancing device. A lancing device is less barbaric than just jabbing yourself! Here again the lancets are specific to the lancing device. It is a good idea to acquire a good supply of test strips and lancets to keep yourself stocked up for the long haul. Most people who use a meter start the day with a fasting blood sugar test. More tests are added throughout the day depending on your needs such as before &/or after meals, before or during exercise, before bedtime, once during the night, in the early hours of the morning ….. Your medical providers may offer advice on meters & test strips to get plus the amount of testing you need to do.

I don’t know anything about the price. Medicare pays for mine
Meter, strips and lancets. All free. So price is pretty much a non issue for me. Lancets come from a different company who Medicare pays for under the DM. There are many types of kits so whatever works for you is good. Of course I also have lancets that are painless. I am not happy with Amazon since Medicare gives me a monthly 30 day pack of strips.
I’m curious though. I will check how much strips cost.
Ever since Amazon doubled charged me for a product I have never gone back to them. I prefer Walmart now. No wonder your saying strips are expensive i think you said has expensive strips so you asked me to research prices so i did
Strips for my acuecheck strips are. Only around $16.00 a pack of 100 from cvs.
The ones you’re talking about are around $50-$60 dollars a pack on Amazon

"When do you think it will hit me....." KDSM there's really no "hit" to it. It doesn't all of a sudden come up and smack you along side of the head. It's far more insiduous than that. However, if you're keeping your A1c under 8 your primary should be able to have a "hit" answer for you. This is not a 1+1=2 situation. Take your time to research, there's ton's of info out there. One of the best things I ever did was to obtain a Libre 3 Constant Blood Glucose Monitor. That device will open a whole new world for you. With a Libre 3 in place not only will you have constant glucose info but the device can also instantly transmit that same data to your physicians. It's a Godsend. You, me, and ALL diabetics should have a CGM. So go get a prescription, bolt one on and see more info than you will ever need. Best of luck to you - and luck has nothing to do with it. Hope this helps.
