What happens 3 months after TIA or Stroke when meds finish?

Posted by esque @esque, Jul 20, 2024

I am curious if you were put on anti platelet, aspirin or other meds that you were instructed to take for three months and then stop? Do you have another CT or MRI? I want to know if you had any more issues once the meds are finished?
Did they find a clot or stenosis on your first CT or MRI. Does that issue not come back if you have taken the meds, lost weight and improved your health otherwise?
Are there other things you have done to improve your situation? Thanks!

After my stroke, I wasn't put on anything except a daily aspirin. That was 5-1/2 years ago. I have not had an MRI since the stroke. Frankly, I don't see the point.

Yes, there was a blockage in my brain, leading to the loss of a chunk of brain cells (controlling motor nerves on my right side). I didn't lose much in the way of cognitive ability, thank God.

In terms of improving my condition, I simply work at it every day. I've recovered quite a bit, but still have a long way to go. It's complicated by the fact that I'm older, so normal aging makes it tougher.

The purpose of the 3 month period is to reassess how your body and the disease have reacted to the medication. If results are positive the drugs are usually continued and if not discontinued or changed. You’re reading too much into the 3 month time line, it’s only a place make so to speak.

The doctors up I saw were adamant about the three months. I started the meds the day after my TIA but I had to stop the Brilinta and Aspirin because I had to have surgery about 1.5 months later. After the surgery I had to wait a couple of weeks to restart because of the bleeding risk. But now the neurologist was insistent on starting a whole new three months of the meds! This is the issue that prompted the question.
I was also told I could stop the anti platelet after that with no followup needed unless I had an issue. So what is the “magical three months” all about?

At the least, most people will continue to take Aspirin 81mg(aka, baby aspirin) daily. Talk w your doctor about that!

Yes I do plan to continue the aspirin. They have me on a coated one that is supposed to help with not getting ulcers. I am currently covered with bruise marks….that I hope are from the anti platelet and not the aspirin.

Have you simply asked the physician?
