Has anyone had a tight band feeling after total knee replacement?

Posted by mhort1213 @mhort1213, Feb 28, 2019

I am 8 weeks post TKR and have had this very tight band around my knee since week one. My Dr at 6 wks says it is normal and will go away. Has anyone else had this and did it go away and when?

Was your leg also swollen? Mine is 1" larger from above knee, my knee, and all down my calf than the other leg. It does not seem to be a traditional form of edema, but could it be fluid retention?

Week 7 here. Very tight every single morning. PT works me out majorly. ROM gets to 122* and 0*, but it's like beginning over ever single time. My gait is not right yet. My back and hip are starting to suffer as I start to walk more. Perhaps too early?

Dr. mentioned at 6 week post-op that they discussed using a smaller component during the surgery, and will for my second knee. This took me aback. Is this what is causing my issues? Or is this just slow normal healing? I have a smaller leg, BMI is smaller- do they not size accordingly? I thought that was of most importance!

Where is it painful? I get pain in front right. Do not stop PT and exercises. Keep going!

No worries you are way early yet. Normal feeling for a while yet. If all is well a good pt will get you through. If you can when they say it’s okay deep water aerobics is good. If you are o and 122 for extension and flexion at 7 weeks that is awesome. It took me little over 3 months before I could sleep through the night with no pain. My therapist addressed all my issues including gait as that was issue for me as well. I also had him teach me how to get up if I fall or am kneeling. Sounds like you are doing great!

Plus I worry about all of the medication. I normally never took anything but a 200mg Motrin now and then.
I still take 1 oxycodone an hour before therapy and use Tylenol and Motrin back and forth the rest of the time.
Love my ice therapy for sure.

I’ve really not had an issue with bruising or swelling from the get go aside from first few days.

I’m 14 weeks yesterday from RIGHT TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT. I still have a tight band around my knee. Doc says it’s a marathon not a sprint. I’ll take his word. for now

I had issues on both sides of my new knee with pain and right size a huge area of numbness always had small are of numbness from 2007 meniscus surgery. My therapist did cupping on the right side which took most pain away (and area of numbness has greatly decreased) and for the rest of side pain he had me use a rolling pin to roll from top to bottom of both knee sides for 3 minutes per side I think daily had TKR in 2021 at first it was very painful to do but over time pain lessened and then pain was gone I have a great physical therapist, DPT Lots of credentials and he utilized deep tissue massage, muscle stimulator, dry needling, taping during my recovery . He provided me exercise regimen which I still do as prescribed squats, squeezing ball. Leg extensions sitting and laying with ankle weights and stationary bike and other exercises

It is scar tissue. We all produce scar tissue at different rates. I have had 4 open surgeries on my right knee. I still continue to have issues, mainly with scar tissue. It has now impinged my popetial tendon in my right leg. I have appt scheduled for 7/12/24 for a CT scan. Pretty certain they are going to find massive scar tissue. This pain reared its ugly head in Feb 2024 Have been dealing with chronic pain and ache. i continue PT but it is not sustainable. It helps in the moment. IF scar tissue is the culprit I will have a Ultrasound Guided Percutaneous Tenotomy of the knee. I am tired!!!

I have the same thing. I am a little over 3 months out from knee replacement. I have the tight band and feel it is scar tissue. My popetial tendon is also inflamed, not sure yet if it is impinged. I am requesting a cat scan. I’m not familiar with the Ultrasound Guided Percutaneous Tenotomy of the knee. How does it work? How did yours go on the 12th? Wishing you the best.

I have tight feeling, and lot of pain in lower part of knee. lot of stiffness in the whole leg.
it is two and half years after the surgery. Surgeons are not paying any attention to this. did their surgery , made their money and could not care what happens afterwards. Just patients bad luck.
