Solving Leaking Pouch Problem

Posted by harrison221 @harrison221, Jul 11 6:17pm

I use a Hollister 82711 pouch, a Coloplast Barrier Ring and Coloplast Barrier Skin Spray. I started to have problems with leakage at the bottom of my Stoma. The leakage was minor and did not seep outside the ring but would get under the edge of the ring and irritate the skin around the bottom edge of my Stoma. I am very active and work outside every day for several hours with the temperature around 95. My Stoma Nurse and I have figured out that excessive sweating is causing the problem. Maybe this post will help others.

What is your method for changing your ostomy? I use stoma powder when needed, skin barrier wipe, barrier ring, then Skin Tac wipe before wafer, polish it off with barrier strips. Tried different things over the years, works for me and I live in California desert. Best of luck.

I do everything you do but the strips and since I have slowed my outside exposure (95 + here) my Stoma has cleared. Thanks for your response. Stay safe.

I use a wax sealer Cohesive, never had a leak and I am a very active 80 year old male. After changing my Convatec pouch, with my glove on I take a hair dryer and warm my hand and apply my hand with some pressure to the ring area, I do this 3 or 4 times, I feel I am making a better seal against my skin with heat of pressure. Again, never had a leak.

I have had my colonoscopy for a year now and after a lot of trial and error finally found a coloplast appliance which has worked great for me. All of a sudden in the past few weeks I have started having a lot of pancaking and leakage. I take colace to keep stools soft but when it happens I seem to have a large movement all at once. Has anyone had this problem I add a deodrant to pouch to help it slide blow into pouch to be sure its not collapsing but cant solve the problem It usually happens in the morning and all i have is a piece of toast or frozen waffle Any suggestions

I have a very high output and I have to empty about 7-8 times each day in order to keep the solution from backing up and causing a leakage. I wash my pouch out after each emptying which helps with the pancaking. I take Metamucil 4 times per day and Lomotil and Imodium to try to keep it together but always have a lot of liquid. I always use a Barrier Ring and place Stoma Paste about 1/4" wide on the bottom half of the Ring which is helping with the leaks. Be sure that you have a little air and moisture in your pouch which will help with the pancaking. I also use a Hollister #7806 4" X 4" Barrier Ring which I cut to fit the pouch. I make it larger than the ones that are prepackaged. Mine are about 2 1/2" in diameter. I also cut my own hole in my pouch being sure that I have a snug fit. One of my main problems has been because my Stoma Nurse had me cutting my hole too large. Always use Stoma Scissors and be careful to cut your holes as round as possible. I use a piece of stainless steel pipe the same size as my Stoma hole and stretch my ring over the pipe, then insert the pipe in the pouch hole and slide the Barrier down the pipe and onto the pouch. This lines up the Barrier Ring with the pouch hole perfectly every time. If you need a pipe let me know what size and I will try to make and send you one. You might be able to purchase one on the internet. Be sure you preheat the Barrier Ring before applying to the pouch and your skin. I use a hair dryer to dry my skin and heat the ring and pouch. I always use Skin Barrier Spray also. Hope this helps.

The I use requires frequent emptying and replacing. Also have to make sure the area surrounding the stoma is very dry before applying the mounting ring.
