Mid-back muscle spasms: Unending

Posted by ksdm @ksdm, Mar 12 3:48pm

Does anyone else have thorasic muscle spasms in their back? I have been getting them about 4 times a year for 20 years. They usually last about 6 weeks and go away at night so I can sleep. I have tried all medicines that might be appropriate and nothing stops the spasms during the day. Sitting, lying, standing doesn't matter. The drugs make me feel sick and can't eat and I can't afford to lose weight. Wrecking my life!!

I have seen 2 chiropractors and they both made my back worse! If you can see an orthopedic back doctor, I believe you will get better advice. Just my humble opinion.

I will never see another chiropractor and my orthopedist states they can be of some use (pain mgmt) but “cracking” the back is the worse thing that can be done to a back.

If you have muscle back spasms, there are medications to take that work great but you need an MD. Good luck!

I have the name of a massage therapist and after my spasm has gone for good (It's on its way!) This will be my next stop. Thanks, Susan!

I love my massage therapist. I feel so good after seeing her. Glad to hear you are seeing one.

Did I mention that my orthopedic doctor gave me an Rx for muscle spasms. It really helps! Happy to give you the name if you want. I usually take one at bedtime as all the daytime activity leaves me sore at night. He told me that I could take them 4 times a day. But, I once took one during the day and it made me drowsy.

Keep me posted please if you start massages. Would love to know if they help you. Feel good!

I think she is probably talking about flexeril. I was on it for awhile. It is a very powerful drug. I would do some research before taking it. Also, some folks experience that it only works for a short while...like a week or two...then it no longer works. That was my experience with it.

I have also had therapeutic massage. Helped me a great deal.

With muscle spasms I would definitely take a look at your hydration levels. My spasms are much, much worse if I am not hydrating optimally. I absolutely have to have at least 8 glasses of water each and every day. I know that most folks really don't do that, if you get in there and count.

And then, of course, into electrolytes. I used to do Gatorade. Now I do a natural version called Vitamin Water.

And daily stretching also has helped a lot. Have to ask the professionals which ones are the best to do.

Very sorry about the problems, take care...

Thank you! Interesting enough, the amount of water I drink doesn't affect my back muscle spasms! I drank 10 glasses of water every day for 7 days (as an experiment) and then just drank when I am thirsty....the result is the same, but everyone is different. I will say that bending over toward my toes will relieve the spasm instantly, (stretching out the muscle) but of course, it comes right back . I am going to get a therapeutic massage for the first time tomorrow, so I am looking forward to that!! I think I know what stretching I need to do because I know exactly where the "bad" muscle is. It's about the size of my thumb, if you can believe it, but hurts like hell, every 15 seconds if I don't take 10 mg of valium. Can't do too much taking that much valium except fall asleep in front of the TV!!

Flexeril was one of the many drugs I was prescribed and it did nothing. Truly, the only drug that has any effect on my muscle spasm is valium and I have to take 10 mg. (and just sit in my recliner with my wonderful heating pad from Amazon for $14!) I highly recommend it because it has a timer in case you fall asleep.

I don't understand why all of the doctors that I have seen can't do anything for my back muscle spasm. I have been chair-bound, with the heating pad, since the end of June. Granted, I am 82 years old, but I have no other physical problems and plenty of energy that I can't use! PLEASE, someone, help me!! I have tried all muscle drugs and all pain pills (which upset my stomach) and nothing stops it!

I’ve had shoulder/thoracic muscle spasms that travel the whole side from neck to bottom of ribcage. I, like you, tried many different approaches. I have the muscle relaxants and pain meds, which I don’t like , but at a certain point I take, to get some sleep. I FINALLY decided to try acupuncture. No more muscle spasms, except on occasion if I do too much with my right arm, then all Hell breaks loose. I’ve been having acupuncture treatments for 2 yrs this month. I’m on a maintenance plan. My acupuncture Doctor has helped me tremendously. Acupuncture may be worth a try. Have you tried chiropractic? I’d had a mastectomy and she feels this is scar tissue. Blessings and I hope you find some relief.
