Tingling fingers part of PMR symptom?
Been tapering for about 5 months. I have reduced my prednisone level from 7.5mg for quite a few weeks to now 6mg. On 6mg for 3 weeks now. As part of this reduction I have noticed some tingling sensation at times in my forearm and fingers. Never noticed before this taper. . Is it a symptom of PMR?

Hello,
The tingling/numbness of my fingers has presented on occasion, perhaps twice. I do not believe there is a hard fast rule regarding what one would deem classical symptoms regarding PMR. I now have rosacea in the morning which is a new symptom for 2-3 months now. This has never happened to me before. Is it PMR or prednisone? Difficult to know in the same regard as why one will respond well to steroids and another will not. The disease process plays out differently in each of us to some extent.
I heard a theory that the hand nerves route through the neck muscles area and the nerves may be triggered because of that. Made sense to me so be kind to your neck area.
Hi @andirae, It sounds like you have done a great job at tapering. I am at much higher levels than you but I have had to taper no more than .5 at a time. Apparently my body requires a super slow taper. Even though 7.5 to 6 is still a slow taper, it might be too much for your body now. Something to consider. In addition, I normally associate tingling with neuropathy. It might be worth a discussion with your doctor if it is bothersome. I have had tingling in one arm/hand throughout my PMR journey. I hope this is helpful. Blessings!
Carpal tunnel is associated with autoimmune disease and chronic inflammation. If it persists your doctor could order EMGs to see if your
nerves are affected.
I had a much worse version of that at the beginning of my PMR journey. Which went away with prednisone. I had originally thought it was carpal tunnel, but Dr. Google informed me it was cubital tunnel in my case. It only happened while sleeping and I was able to get rid of it by consciously keeping my arm straight at night. Which is hard to do while you’re asleep, but it worked. Of course, since this is emerging while you’re tapering, it sounds like a situation to run by your doctor if it persists.
Thank you for your comment.
Hello, I am new to this group and recently diagnosed with PMR. Since the onset of symptoms, I have had significant tingling in the hands and fingers- almost as if my fingertips were asleep. When symptoms were most acute, I was waking (almost without fail around 3 am) with stabbing pains in my hands. Am responding to prednisone but the tingling in hands and fingers remains. My diagnosis is still so fresh that I don’t have a rheumatologist appointment for a couple of weeks but this is a question I will ask about and post reply. Best to all.
Welcome @chrisgh, My PMR is currently in remission but I've had on and off struggles with waking up during the night with hands and fingers feeling asleep and painful pins and needles feeling. For me it is due to sleeping on my side and sometimes having my hands and arms in a bad position and causing them to fall asleep. It is a good idea to write down a list of questions you may have for your upcoming rheumatologist appointment.
Do you have the same symptoms during the day or is it just at night and wakes you up?
Thank you, John, for the benefit of your experience. The problem with my hands is constant - tingling and so on. Fortunately, I am no longer waking at night with the stabbing pain in my hands.
Again, many thanks - I just happened upon this support group but am learning so much from it!
Arms and hands asleep and tingling were definitely an issue at night for me during the height of my symptoms before diagnosis and treatment. There really was no sleeping for me. At the very end before treatment began with Prednisone, I even had a nerve pain in my left hand that was horrible. Prednisone took about 4 days to begin working and turn my symptoms around. It was about 7 days into treatment that I found sleep again. I remember thinking "wow, this is what sleep feels like!" I am left with some aches and stiffness in my hands and shoulders in the mornings but very livable. The tingling and falling asleep sensation has not returned. I hope you find relief!
