fingernail loss with alopecia universalis

Posted by peeweesmom @peeweesmom, Jul 6 10:19pm

I have been diagnosed with alopecia universalis. My fingernails are peeling and cracking down to the quick of the nails both fingers and toes. Does anyone have any insight to this painful problem/ The dermatologist attributed it to the alopecia.

Have you also consulted with your primary doctor? There are so many health issues that can impact our nails and hair. Mine turned out to be Vitamin B 12 deficiency that my doctors, including dermatologist was slow to diagnose and then under treated. Getting tested before you start taking it is crucial. It can cause many negative things in your body.

I realize this condition can be very distressing. I know there are on line support options. How are you doing?

Thank you for your wonderful reply. Now I don't feel so lonely with this very painful isue. I am always catching a ragged edge on a nail and have to cut further into the quick. I will ask my primary MD to order a
b12 test. In general I am doing well. I have a few wigs, but usually just put a hat or baseball cap on. What a ahockyhis has been. Hope all is well with you.

I realize the emotional strain can be great. Thank you for mind words.

I’m not sure what caused my hair loss and damaged nails, but my nails have definitely improved in quality since I was prescribed significant daily doses if B12. It’s very noticeable. Before this, they split really bad.

Do you have access to a specialist in hair loss?

I am happy to hear that you are seeing improvement with your fingernails. I am having to put glue on the flaps of nail to keep them from getting caught and ripped off.

I just read an article that stated it is possible to have complete return of hair after about 3 months with AU. Hope that proves true.

I am still learning how to use this system and am sorry it took me so long to reply to you. I appreciate your connection and advice.
