Falling for no apparent reason: Any ideas?

Posted by callalily74 @callalily74, Aug 11, 2016

I'm 75, active, female, and constantly falling for seemingly no reason. I just fall! Three times already this week. In one fall, I split my ear and required 8 stitches. No dizziness, etc.

I need falling prevention classes in Seacoast NH. I am getting very worried that one of these falls will result in serious injury. Perhaps I need some kind of testing. Tomorrow, I'm going to an ENT doctor who was referred to me by a doctor at the Urgent Care Clinic who said my ear was infected. The ENT receptionist said maybe he'll refer me to an audiologist or optometrist to do balance, inner ear testing, etc. Does that sound about right to anybody who knows what I'm talking about. Remember, no lightheadedness or dizziness, etc. I take several medications for depression, anxiety, cholesterol, etc, but my mind does not feel foggy or cloudy.

Please help me find an appropriate doctor specializing in this issue. Or a suitable class or program. I am getting scared now. It happens too much. I only was really hurt once so far when I split my ear when I fell, but I know it can happen any time now and maybe disable me, or worse.

Please help me. I'll be here to see any posts all day today and am free to answer any questions you may have.

Hi @callalily74. Welcome to the Just Want to Talk group. Have you read these fall prevention tips from Mayo Clinic? http://mayocl.in/1ESOV4Q These might offer some additional insight, as well as share extra steps you can take to prevent falling. Because you don't want to keep cutting and bruising, or worse - breaking bones.

I'm tagging @dogmamat, @oceanfun1 and @trainwreck54 as I feel they'll be able to provide recommendations and advice. While I'm not a medical professional, I'm curious to know if some physical therapy or exercising would help to strengthen you. Have you been keeping active thus far?

You need to get to a specialist ASAP. If you don't remember having any faintness or dizziness before falling, you might be having loss of memory going back to just before it happens (retrograde amnesia). There might be a cardiac cause that needs study. Heart problems can cause loss of consciousness with NO warning. A good neurologist might be a place to start. Find a doctor who will listen to your story and take a thorough history.

@xottawan, I've already cancelled several neurology appts. The pain and weakness in my right leg is gone so I declined. Today I'm going to an ENT because of my ear and will ask him to refer me to the right source for falling. I do not believe I pass out first or anything like that. I am very curious now to see what is causing this. Because I'm scared. Thank you for your input.

I suffered from falling, having fallen 10 times in one year. I finally took the advice of a friend and went to a trainer. The first thing he did was to take a video of me walking , on his cell phone. Showed it to me and said why are you always looking down? I think that alone is a major problem. Your body will always fall in the direction your head is looking. Also said particular mussels are weak. After 10 visits doing the exercises he had me do I am like a new person. Have not fallen since. I have decided to continue going to him once a week until I feel strong again. I am 80 years old.
I'm 70 and the past six months have felt very unstable on my feet. Have caught myself several times from falling. I finally went to a foot doctor and had my feet x-rayed and found I have arthritis in my right foot, start of hammer toes and of course those bunions (not too bad). I had orthodics, but decided to go to the Good Feet store and now have better orthodics and found that I needed a very good pair of sneakers. I tried on a pair of Brooks there with the new orthodics and so comfortable. I didn't purchase them at that store as they were too expensive, but ended up finding them elsewhere. They help with pronation, more stabilization walking and the alignment of my body is now where it should be. Amazed what a good pair of sneakers can do with the orthodics that I needed.

Elsie
My Mom falls a lot. She has sugar regulation problem. Do you have diabetes!

You said no dizziness. If it were a balance problem you'd know it because you would know you'd lost your balance, such as turning around quickly and falling over bec you couldn't regain your balance. What you said makes it sound more like you might be standing up or walking along and suddenly your legs collapse under you and down you go. Can you better describe what you are doing when you fall for no reason?

Sent from Sandy's mini
Not really. I went to an ENT yesterday for my split ear from falling. That was depressing. My ear is healed, but the two ear pieces never meshed together because I waited too long to get stitches. He is referring me to P.T. at our local hospital. He said it would be more helpful than a balance class. It's very encouraging to know my ear will have a permanent split in it now. I'm very morose this a.m. I started talking to the ENT doctor about having so much suicidal ideation and my husband got angry at me. Stop that-you want me to take you to be admitted to a hospital. come on. We can go right now. He hasn't apologized and I don't think he realizes how disturbing it is to hear that. Total disrespect. Doctor didn't think it was an inner ear issue, because I don't have the right symptoms. I think he attributed it mostly to my aging, 75 year old, body.

This may sound nuts, @callalily74, but your instability could be a symptom of too much Vitamin D, sometimes a key problem of taking Vitamin D supplements. Perhaps you can raise this as a question to your neurologist, if it seems possible.
