Blood in Semen after Prostate Biopsy
I couldn't find an existing thread on this topic, but I wanted to share what I'm seeing so far, and compare with other's results.
I'm 58 years old. After discovering a 5+ PSA result in a routine adult physical, I was scheduled for and received both a MRI, and a Transperineal biopsy. In my case, they took 16 samples. I do not yet have the pathology results.
I was told there could possibly be some blood in my urine, but to watch for clotting, etc and large amounts. I was also told there would likely be some blood in my ejaculate, tapering off over time. I understand the amount of blood can be influenced by number and location of samples.
I was not prepared for what happened though. Four days after the biopsy, and to my horror, I found my expectations were way underestimated. It was not "streaks or spots" of blood, nor was it red-tinted. It looked to be pure blood. The volume was probably double what I would have expected. Hoping that the next day would be more normal, I again tested the waters.. It was nearly as bad, however, the color seemed to be a cross between pure blood and fresh motor oil.
I've got a message into my care team, and I'm awaiting a response while I also await pathology. I'm a bit nervous.
Has this been other's experience? If it is common, why understate it in the publications I was provided?
I have not noticed blood in my urine, however, it tends to be dark-ish as I tend to under-hydrate.

Makes sense to me. Thanks.
I hope this is not too much information for everyone, but I have an appointment on Thursday afternoon with the urologist to discuss the biopsy results.
I feel compelled that I have to self-ejaculate at least once before that appointment to see if there’s been any change in the amount of blood in the semen and the color.
I hope your biopsy results turn out great. Also be prepared for rust brown colored blood in your semen.
@tinker
Good morning, I had my biopsy May 7th, 2024, and I was wondering how long it took for the blood in your semen to go away? It's been 7 weeks and I'm still seeing a lot of blood in my semen.
Thanks
Mine took a full 8 weeks to clear. Hope yours clears up soon. Mine was mainly a rust color, not like blood red, after the first couple of times. Hope that helps.
In my case it was a full 2 months, after my biopsy, before I could say I had recovered from the negative sexual side effects of my biopsy.
I think part of the reason was that I had 21 cores taken, some of which were close to the capsule encompassing my prostate.
The good news is that eventually everything clears up; although it does take much longer than what many will tell you.
The secret after the Biopsy -- Drink LOTS of water with regularity.
It's also good practice at all times .
Thank you. After discussing the biopsy results with the urologist, we thought it would best to take a wait-and-see approach as my score was just a 3+3 = 6 and there was nothing significant on the MRI to any type of procedure. I said an appointment for 6 months from now. He also said I could expect my semen to be rust colored for at least 10 more times. I’m guessing that depends on a lot of factors, such as water intake and frequency of ejaculation.
How long after the prostate biopsy will I have rusty brown semen??
Mine was a full 8 weeks to clear.
