Bird picking at food after Whipple surgery and Creon
In a week I go in for my Whipple surgery. After the surgery my doctor and others on this forum have said I need to eat very small amounts of food but to keep eating. Like a bird that will pick at something then wait a few minutes and then pick a little more. I am on Creon and take 2 24k capsules with regular meals. Will I need to get a new script for a lower dose capsules or how is this delt with?
I do not feel bad right now. I have been drinking 2-3 boost shakes a day and that has really helped. May have even gained a pound or 2. I am really dreading the surgery and the recovery. Then the Chemo if I make it through to that ok. I have been getting things ready and going through stuff and getting rid of a lot so my sons will not have as much to do. I feel well enough to do this now and I am sure I won't after next Friday. Just thought about getting a living will. Hope I can get that done next week. I really don't want to have my innards cut up and removed and re-routed. And follow it up with taking meds that make me really sick. I really don't want to do this. I have decided I would get it a surgery and one chemo series. I just don't want to stay on chemo for the rest of my life. And spend the rest of my life suffering from the chemo sickness. Just a week away and I'm just getting really nervous about what I am doing to myself.

You're welcome. I had the modified Whipple, my surgeon left my stomach intact.
I had a complete “done by hand” Whipple in 2013. Ampalla valve duodenum gallbladder 1/3 of liver & pancreas how much stomach I’m not sure whatever a full Whipple involves. I take over-the-counter psyllium stool softener, twice daily one Ex-Lax pill daily. Those over the counter meds do it for me.
I have had a couple of episodes of what I would call pancreatic blowback, Not sure exactly what really is happening all I can tell you is it’s extremely painful. First time I had it. I thought I was having a heart attack. Went to the emergency room a waste of time that was.
Those blowback episodes have only happened two or three times throughout the years and recently They’ve gone away, totally. As I said before, I eat exactly what I want to and what I feel like eating nothing less nothing more!
Good luck and try to stay away from as many of the prescription meds as you can. I do take other meds, but those were because of my back operation’s that I’ve had. Never but never have your back operated on unless you just can’t otherwise walk at all.
I had a complete pancreatectomy, spleen, duodenum, partial stomach, etc.
Take Creon with any food. Doing pretty good but also type 1 diabetic since I have no pancreas.
I have been diabetic for almost 30 years. It is not a choice for me to have diabetes to get rid of my cancer.
Good evening happyjack. Your surgery is scheduled for Friday morning, so I wanted to wish you well. No one knows what to expect after whipple surgery because every case is different, but moving forward after your surgery, there are a lot of people on Mayo Clinic who can answer questions and give you great advice in the months ahead. Reach out with any questions. Wishing you the best.
Thank you for the well wishes. And for all the help I have received from everyone on this site. Back at you with the well wishes to you and everyone else with their fight with cancer.
A lot of people have you in their prayers. Look forward to your posts after the event. God Bless!
mitchdavis that means a lot to me. I just about have things ready. Laundry is about done and my bag packed for Saturday. Or whenever I get out of surgical intensive care. May be a while until I can get back online. I have a prepaid flip phone with no data on it so I will have to wait until I can log on with my laptop.
I hope nothing but good things for all.
A quick update. I had the modified Whipple and all of my stomach was kept. The doctor repeated that the tumor was large and he could not see how Chemo would be skipped. But that lab work would confirm that or not. I am having some trouble with food. Foods that are easier on my stomach are really bad on my blood sugars. Foods that keep my blood sugars low are really hard on my stomach. They have Ensure shakes here and I have Boost GC at home. I may get to go home tomorrow and hope to be able to work on getting that balanced. It seems that I actually gained 2 kilos in the 5 days I have been here. My gut is really puffed up from the robotic surgery that they were able to do everything with. The drain was removed yesterday. I had 2 small IV's and the second one failed this evening. The other one failed sometime a go and they also removed a large IV I had in case I needed blood. They will need to place another IV to give me meds. Tonight and maybe tomorrow. Just a few more days at most should see me home I hope. Then I can really start recovering.
Hope all is well with you all.
That's great!! Getting through Whipple is hard and you've done it, good for you!! Modified Whipple is great as well, that's what I had and I eat normally now with the help of Creon, and a daily pantoprazole. My stomach was hugely puffed up after surgery, it has since gone down to normal. If it's cancerous then of course they'll give you chemo, pancreatic is so darn aggressive you'll want to get rid of any lingering cells. I'm in Canada and the protocol up here is Folfirinox. It was tough on me (diarrhea and exhaustion) for the first few cycles, then my oncologist reduced the concentration and for the last few cycles I've had almost no side effects at all.
Best of luck on your recovery!
