Can Gabapentin make neuropathy pain worse?

Posted by cwallen9 @cwallen9, Apr 16, 2019

I started getting peripheral neuropathy pain about nine months ago in my feet and hands right after I received a cervical steroid injection. I started taking gabapentin about 7 months ago. I have gradually increased my dose from 100 mg a day to 1500 mg. I can't say that it has decreased my pain at all. In fact, my pain has gotten steadily worse. I was just wondering if it is possible that gabapentin can sometimes make neuropathy pain worse. My EMG and biopsy results are negative for short fiber neuropathy so far.

It makes your question a very valid one.
I was on Gabapentin for several years upto 2400 mg daily with no relief of my pain and numbness in my feet and legs.
The last neurologist I went to told me to get off it so I did.
Nothing I’ve tried has helped me.
Will be starting Rituxan infusions in few months.
Hope they offer me some relief,so tired of this everyday.

Thanks for your observations and very sorry about your continually
pain..
I am learning that neuropathy is a very complicated disorder..
And it is becoming very clear to me
that our medical system in America
because of the way that system works is way behind in keeping up
with the treatment of neuropathy..
Stay tuned..
In the next few months I will be asking a lot of questions to a lot of
people..

All meds can become ineffective over long term use. Our bodies are built to build immunity to Harmful/Toxic things. Synthetic Drugs are considered foreign toxic chemicals to our body.
Ask your Rheumatologist about different options. TiZanidine may be helpful. Consume lots of Magnesium and Turmeric. Also highly recommend Red Light/Infrared Therapy and Ice baths or CryoTherapy. I can’t do ice baths, but Cryotherapy isn’t too bad and it’s SUPER good for you and MIGHT help reset your body.
Good Luck!

I was also on high-dose Gabapentin for nearly 18 months, and after stopping I believe my Neuropathy pain in my legs has increased. I am at a loss to find a cure for this high-dose Crestor-induced Neuropathy. My sleep has been so poor 'No deep sleep' for many days of the week, it induced heart disease with a double bypass performed for a complete blockage of the L.A.D.

I am on Gabapentin 300mg for a year for back pain. It has not affected my neuropathy but does help with back pain. Problem is side effects. I am dizzy 24/7 for 5 years undiagnosed and Gabapentin makes it worse plus diarrhea. I have to choose between back pain and severe dizziness each day but neuropathy not affected

Deep tissue massage has helped my neuropathy alot. I was on gabapentin for a short time, replaced it with medical marijuana, which helped a lot, especially with sleep. I use Marijuana gummy at night for sleep. Check, your state to see if you have a medical marijuana.
