I have the same symptoms. In my case I have corneal erosion (excruciating pain) caused because my eyes do not close completely shut at night while sleeping so eyes dry out. I can't tell that they do not shut all the way, so I was surprised. I just got an eye mask called Tranquileyes to keep eyes shut at night and hoping this works. I sincerely hope you can resolve your eye issue, I know how painful this is.

I also have cornea erosion due to not being able to close my eye at night. My ophthalmologist advised me to use a PM preservative free ointment to protect the eye at night. During the day I wear a contact which is considered abandoned contact lens. I am still having trouble so now considering getting a scleral contact.
Can you tell more about the device called Tranquileyes? Where did you purchase it and how does it work? Thank you very much and best wishes to you in your healing!
