Chronic Anxiety and Functional Spasms-I’m afraid to go out!
I’ve had generalized anxiety just about forever.
Several weeks ago I started have full body spasms. They were happening when I became anxious, or stressed in any way at all.
The spasms have my feet banging on the floor, my arms and hands shaking, and waving almost violently. It lasts between 5 and 10 minutes. Afterwards I’m exhausted.
This is not something I would like to go through in public! I didn’t go to church this morning because just the thought of being around people, and having an attack, caused me to start shaking!
I have a therapist and a psychiatrist. I’m meeting with both soon. I pray they can help me. I don’t want to a recluse or have agoraphobia.

Gosh. It sounds like a kind of seizure. Have you discussed this with your primary care doctor?
@bigphyl
My Neurologist who specializes in movement disorders diagnosed me.
My dad has seizure like episodes, in which he loses his leg strength and vision. His head and neck are also affected. His was diagnosed with Conversion Disorder. Think that’s the old terminology. He did well with a backup med to have on hand and he went on Sertraline. He learned to live with it. We watched for queues the episodes were about to start, so we could have him sit and take a pill. His episodes got less intense over time. I think talk therapy would have helped even more.

Did they say what caused your Dad’s conversion disorder if that is indeed what it was? And did he have to be on Sertraline for a long time?
