Hmm...my Grandma always made brine (aka crock) pickles and there was quite a bit more to doing it. We're you following a Dept of Agriculture or University Extension Service recipe? We love to do our own preserving but don't want to risk any illness, so as much as I love Grandma's recipes, I compre them to the lab tested version. I even have one of my Grandma's old Ag Service canning pamphlets from the 1930's. Turns out the methods and cautions are still similar
