How to stop biting your tongue?

Posted by jods @jods, Jul 5 1:40pm

I can’t remember when it started but for long as I remember I have alway bit my tongue at random times.
When talking but mostly when eating.
My dental health is not that bad.
I am wondering how to stop it.
It bleeds like a murder scene.
Please help.

Sorry you're having this happen! I know how painful it can be.

After having a stroke, I would frequently bite my tongue or cheek on the affected side, typically drawing blood.

Years later, it still happens sometimes.

What I have found is that it's often the result of me eating (chewing) too fast, or trying to talk while eating (or even doing anything else, even typing).

Have you discovered that there are any circumstances that cause the biting to occur more frequently? For example, stress, excitement, distraction, etc.?

Hello @jods and welcome to Mayo Connect. I can see that @scottrl has already offered you some good suggestions. I'm wondering if you have mentioned this bothersome problem to your dentist. Sometimes, dental bridges, crowns, etc., can interfere with your bite and then cause this biting of the mouth or tongue. This can be adjusted at a dental appointment.

I look forward to hearing from you again. Will you post any updates or other questions?

The occasional tongue bite with some bleeding for me has always been when I am not paying Any attention to eating: chewing, tasting even how it moves and touches inside the mouth. It's bad habit, I know, food need to be Enjoyed as mindful eating -- or living -- requires.
And since I've worn my teeth thru grinding, a stress related behavior, I end up sometimes even biting the adjacent side of my mouth.
