What are your experiences with tramadol ?

Posted by Always Hopeful @AlwaysHopeful, Jun 16 7:42am

I have been taking tramadol for over 20 years. It was first prescribed for knee pain. This was the era when they did meniscus surgery. I'm sure the medication is not effective for me now, but it continues to be prescribed. Any other thoughts or experiences?

I have been taking Oxy only 2.5 mg at night otherwise I can't sleep. I went to a new pain management doctor (my surgeon gave me the Oxy) who told me to get off of the Oxy, but is only offering me treatments that didn't work before my surgery for lumbar stenosis. So how many years were you on it and so if you were addicted what are you doing now ? I don't know what to do except I don't want to stay up every night !
Actually the Oxy does hurt my stomach, or something is hurting my stomach.

I've been on oxy for the past 30 or so years. A long time. I've seen govt regs ebb and flow. If they're being prescribed and you take as directed, yes, you build up some tolerance. But there is no cure or real 'treatment' for arthritis. Docs will be happy to send you for next to useless treatments. There's way more $$ in that than prescribing meds. Opiates can be abused. But frankly the vast majority of opiate abuse we all read about concern street versions, particularly street fentanyl. That homemade crap varies in strength and impurities so a user never really knows what they're getting. Find a local pain clinic. You'll sign some documents and have to go back regularly, or video calls, and they'll maintain and monitor your TC's.

Tha nks. Yes people look at me like I'm a depraved addict when I say I am taking Oxy, but they don't have to live with throbbing calf muscles all night. The surgery was supposed to fix that, but it didn't. The oxy does upset my stomach however.

Just think of all the peoples' opinions you will change seeing that you're not a depraved addict.
I stopped worrying about what people thought long ago. With all the negative publicity it's hard for anyone to see the positives in this class of meds. I just can't wait until the govt idiots who drew up the drug restrictions are having their very own aches and pains and nothing seems to help.

I also find that a little food with my nighttime dosage helps with the upset stomach issues.

Have you thought about a pain as stimulator?

What does your pain feel like ? That's the question, people have different pain. I have a prickly feeling and sometimes pinpoint cramping. My Surgeon gave me Oxycodone which helps but I don't want to get addicted also it makes me nauseous and kind of depressed. Has anyone had similar experiences ? Is Tramadol better ? I can't sleep now, so I thought I would just try to connect with other people with pain.

Tramadol is weak compared to oxycodone and as far as addiction goes that's under your control, but then I guess a lot of people can't control it and get addicted is why it's so hard to get help nowadays.Pain meds will lose it effectiveness after your on it long enough, just cut back on it for a while

Good device. It's too bad there is nothing between Tramadol and oxycodone.

Thank you for the definition of tolerance level. My thought is that as the years pass and you continue to take the drug, there must be a point when increasing the dosage of drug accomplishes nothing in respect to pain relief. You're just increasing the possibility that you will be experiencing side effects. If I'm correct, I'm somewhat concerned that I have been prescribed tramadol for over 20 years.

I have been on tramadol for about 20 years also. Taking 2-3 daily all the time, sometimes up to 4. I do go into withdrawal if I forget the morning dose, by mid afternoon I don’t feel well, nausea, fatigue, aching all over, then take a tramadol and it goes away. I, also, take hydrocodone/apap 6-8 tabs over a week, sometimes days none, other days 2-3 tabs. If you have been taking tramadol for ongoing pain I wouldn’t worry about continuing to take it. I, also, use ice packs, heating pad, massager, stretches.
