Chronic painful muscle knots, widespread

Posted by 1k194 @1k194, Nov 6, 2023

Has anyone else experienced widespread, painful muscle knots that literally never go away?

For years now I’ve had many painful knots in several areas of my body. I have tried ice, heat, muscle relaxers, over the counter pain medication, and massage/trigger point pressure and NOTHING helps. My spouse can find dozens of hard knots in my face, head, jaw, neck, upper back and shoulders, back, arms and legs. The knots are always there, cause pain without touching the area and cause unbearable pain that is nauseating if pressure is applied to the knot(s). My spouse tries to massage them the make the knot release but it doesn’t help; I just can’t stand the pain and it quickly becomes nauseating. Sometimes the general pain of it (pain that is present without pressing on the knots) is so bad it keeps me awake at night.

What could be causing these knots and pain and what can be done to relieve it?
Thanks

@briarrose could you have fibromyalgia ?

It sounds like it to me. I have painful spots all over my body. Whenever someone touches my spine, shoulders, arms, legs…everywhere it is extremely painful.
I have had fibromyalgia for many years, and have never found any solutions.

Yes, I certainly believe I do SusanEllen66!
However I never took the time to get diagnosed, just lived with it.
So my question...how does one even get a diagnosis of fibromyalgia?
And I am reading, really no solutions...except maybe massages, if one can stand them?
Don't know.
Also, aren't there a lot of co-existing health ailments with fibromyalgia?
What comes to my mind is severe anxiety and PTSD. And I have suffer from both.
On medications, of course, but there is no magic bullet for these disorders especially when severe and life-long.

@briarrose all my doctors do is press on tender spots. If you wince on cry out OUCH! then you are diagnosed with it.

No cure, but sometimes pain relievers help.

Just read all the medical conditions associated with fibromyalgia and I have every single one:
Anxiety, depression, hx. of psychological trauma, difficulty managing my stressors, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic insomnia, frequent brain fog and just diagnosed with severe TMJ issues. And a female over 40...
Right now I am having muscular pain on the inside of my left knee. A MRI showed absolutely nothing...everything was "normal". No explanation for this pain which I have been experiencing for several months now. My PCP baffled. Will start PT and have a pending appointment with an orthopedist but not for several months (soonest opening).
Now wondering - is this fibromyalgia?

@briarrose
I’m not a doctor. However, it sounds to me like you have fibromyalgia.
It’s a neurological disorder. The brain over reacts to pain.
Aside from medication there is nothing to help.

Have you heard any test run for audio immune diseases?

I ended up being diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2002 secondary to the bacterial spinal meningitis. The meningitis caused the fibromyalgia. I have also severe axonal sensorimotor polyneuropathy, small fiber neuropathy, elner danlos 3, dystonia, RA, Sjögrens, cardiac autonomic neuropathy, and CIDP. The meningitis for me caused severe nerve damage through out my body. Yes, massages hurt, My neurologist was sadistic his motto was no pain no gain. He passed away after over 20 years seeing him. I cry through them, I would also feel so much better afterwards.

Artemis,

I am so sorry for what you are going through. So the massages are painful, but you feel better afterwards? Is that right? That seems to make sense, as the massage would loosen muscles and remove toxins from muscle fibers.

I know very little about these neurological diseases. All the best to you friend. Joe

That is correct. I now look forward to them. Not the pain but the feeling afterwards. You have to drink lots of water afterwards. No caffeine or anything else. The water washes away the built up toxins in the body that is released through the massage.
