Brain surgery question for families: Waiting area at St. Mary's

Posted by lindseyr24 @lindseyr24, Jun 25 11:48am

Hi - my dad will be having brain surgery to remove a meningioma in a few weeks at St. Mary’s (Mayo) in Rochester, MN.

Does anyone know what the waiting area is like for families? It will be an all day surgery so I’m just trying to plan ahead.

Thank you!

The waiting areas are pretty basic. There is a special waiting room also, with more privacy, usually. They should take your cell number and give you updates, such as: in OR, operation begun, closing started. There is a board with patient updates by number (assigned that day) also. The primary surgeon will come out to give you an in person update when closing is underway. Make sure to ask which waiting room you should be in. There are several, so make sure the people know where you are . It can be a bit confusing. (My husband has had two brain surgeries there, so I know).

I was recently diagnosed with an Acoustic Neuroma and I am due to visit with a neuro-surgeon next week. I would like to hear from anyone who has the same diagnosis and what were your options, and what did you do.

I guess I am looking for a synopsis on discovery, treatment and recovery from others who have gone before. I am 85 years old and any type of surgery is not that appealing.

Thank you,
Donnie Hanberry

@lindseyr24, in addition to the helpful post from @ruthannray, I want to bring @roch into this discussion as well. She may have additional information.

lindseyr24 @lindseyr24,

I would like to add few suggestions to this discussion;
- There are surgical communicators that work with surgeons to help keep the family up to date during surgery. Each surgeon has their own process for communicating with family members. Definitely ask surgeon or nurse about what to expect during surgery day.
- Bring your phone charger with you, if going be long day, you may need to recharge your phone.
- There are multiple green spaces that are nice places to sit if weather permits. Edith Graham Mayo Courtyard (by admission area), Joseph Courtyard , and Peace Garden. Stop at one of information desk and they can provide a map and directions
- The Chapel in Domitila area is beautiful place. There is smaller chapel in Francis building.
- There is a recently remodel patient cafeteria in Francis building that you can get food / coffee to go or eat there. Plus, multiple restaurants across street from Francis entrance. Most have takeout options you can pick up and take back to hospital.

I am at hospital every week doing volunteer service, feel free to reach out if have any specific questions about campus.

Here is flyer that has map of St Mary's campus, Do not get overwhelmed, there is always someone who can help you find your way.
