How safe is Famotidine 40 mg ?
I was taking pain pills (many different types) for a muscle spasm in my back and got an "acid stomach" as a result. I was on a PPI for a month which worked and when I stopped, the acid stomach came back. I started taking Famotodine and after a few weeks, I was symptom-free!! I wonder if I could stop taking it now or do you think my acid stomach would come back? I have no side effects from the drug.

You cannot stop cold turkey. Even though an H2 is half the strength of a ppi you will still get acid rebound. You have to wean off of them.
Thank you!
My GI doc switched mento this from PPIs i had taken waaay too long. It worked well just as you describe. I found that after being on it a few weeks I waa able to quit unless I have heartburn from eating.
Weaning was simple for me - every second day, every third, I had no rebound but if i had,
just slow the taper.
I’ve been on famodatine for a very long time. My dr said it was safe. But also said when I’m ready to try to get off of it I would just have to wean off. He said it would take 6-8 weeks for me. Only because I’ve been on it for years. Definitely speak to your Dr. Good luck! 😊
I take one before bedtime. As long as there are no serious risks of using it long term, I intend to remain on this antacid. Any risks of doing so?
I have read that it is not a great idea to stay on it long-term. I don't know what the consequences would be but I have decided to wean myself off since I have no more symptoms. My doctor gave me a schedule to do it. I can still take one if I feel acidy at some point.
My doctor gave me a schedule to wean myself off famotidine. I will start tomorrow. She also said if I needed to, I could take one on occasion. That's comforting!
Great news!
