Reclast Infusions: Side-effects & Recovery time

Posted by cindydee @cindydee, Mar 20, 2018

I just had a reclast infusion last week and have had serious side effects. I had the worst flue like aching for 5 days then my lefty arm became full of inflammation in the wrist, elbow and shoulder which caused extreme pain and I lost the ability to straighten my elbow. Ultrasound showed huge amounts of fluid throughout the arm. The right arm is now starting to have the same symptoms. The pain is excruciating. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Neither the ER doctor nor the Dr. who prescribed the procedure knew what to do to ease the symptoms. Both arms from fingertips to shoulder are swollen and neither elbow will straighten. Anyone else have adverse reactions to the reclast infusion? If yes, how long did it last?

Hello, I’m not sure I have it right.. Are you on both Reclast and Forteo at the same time? Your tips about the 45 min infusion & the other two are really interesting…why does a longer infusion time help? I wonder if the doc could first approve this ..rather than confront the tech guy on the day b off…interested in asking for this if I can understand why this helps…Thanks for helping !

Talk to your doctor before the infusion. My first infuse was a nightmare....wound up in the hospital for pain management. Second infusion I talked to doctor ahead of time. He started me on pain meds before the infusion. I requested a 45 min. Infusion instead of the 15 min the time before. It made all the difference. Of course you still need to drink lots of water and take Tylenol in preparation for the infusion. Wishing you all the best ...

I had a Reclast infusion on 4-15-24 and expected flu symptoms but not the pain that is in my joints. In the last 2 months I’ve had swelling and pain in both hands and rotator cuffs that have not gone away and now in the knee. Mostly right. At night I have the hardest time getting control of my pain. During the day I keep moving and take anti inflammatory supplements. I’m tired of living with this pain. It would help to know how long this will last?

Im sorry you had that reaction. I had a similar reaction to my first ( and only) Reclast infusion about 20 months ago. My knee swelled up painfully with so much fluid to the point I couldn’t put weight on it for a week. It resolved thankfully but I haven’t taken anything else since. I also took Evenity prior to that.

I am having the same horrible symptoms. Beyond terribly painful. Excruciating. The medical system seems to be in the dark about this, which is either negligent or clueless...I can't tell which it is. More individuals need to report side effects, but how and where?

@windyshores, How long did you have discomfort after the 20% Reclast infusion? I'm so glad that you are now feeling better!

I'm really sorry this is happening to you. But I know what you are going through. I took Evenity that cause joint pain in my hands. I discontinued it and followed up with Reclast that I had taken before without problems. Not this time. Within 3 days the pain in my right hand had increased and within about 6 weeks it spread to my left. It was only in my hands (predominately my thumb joints) and no other joints. I'm thankful for that.
The best way I dealt with it was Tylenol (500mg) 3 times a day (can't take Advil). I was very careful to keep it at 1500mg/day. I also used voltaren cream; not really sure that helped.

But what you want to know is how long will this last. For me about a year I started to notice that I could squeeze my eye drop bottle and, don't laugh, but I could tuck in my shirt and pull up my pants without pain. Oh, I can open jars, too. There is some other things that come under the TMI designation. I still have discomfort but it is so much better. If I overdo my fingers and wrist will let me know.

You are doing the right things movement is your friend. I would really suggest going to a PT person for at least a couple of times to get some basic exercises and stretches. My PT person gave me some exercises; stretches and strength ones for my hands and wrist. She was part of the specialized PT for hands. I would also ask them about water walking/exercises.
I'm a big advocate of water exercises and water walking. I can do all these on my own. If you have access to a pool I would try water walking for your knees; it helps mine (preexisting condition). The water takes a lot of weight off your knees and allows you to move more easily. You are more buoyant in water. Moving through the water does help strengthen your muscles around your knees and the rest of your body. You don't have to press hard through the water. The water offers a lot of resistance. Work up to it don't go all 'weekend warrior' and do too much. Also moving your arms, gently, through the water should help I would think.

Everyone is different but this helped me. Good luck.

@ninalouise,
I'm so sorry to hear about your horrible response to Reclast. Did you take the full dose? I am afraid I will have to try a low dose in the future to lock in gains from Tymlos. I am on half a dose of that. I have bad side effects from almost all medications. Hopefully, we will have better options then. Thanks for your response.

This is from the medication guides for Evenity and for ReClast.

"You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA1088."

May be somebody can help me. I found on internet an information on* medical necessary *for bone densitometry and my physician did the order this time right. I have many problems with my health, Prolia 10 years, stopped, then the infusion Reclast, two weeks in the bed with horrible pain. Alendronate is not for me. I tried.
Now the order for Reclast must be 1 mg slow infusion, but I can not find on internet how to do such order, my physician does not know how to do such order.
May be somebody from a good clinic or hospital, where they do such slow low infusions can give the name of these hospitals and I can ask them to help me.
Thank you.
