Post Laparoscopic surgery for gallbladder and umbilical hernia

Posted by libertyusa @libertyusa, Jul 18, 2019

Just had surgery 3 weeks ago. I am a healthy 70-year old female. I have felt fine throughout; however I have this tiny pain every day, but not all day. What I am imagining is that a staple inside the area is pricking the area. This is only a thought and I cannot quite describe it. When I press around the belly button it does not feel worse, but there is some hardness to the tissue. Could this be stitches healing? It is only in one spot. I called the nurse and she was quite dismissive saying: "you cannot call about every little thing; you are still healing; you should not play golf and a racquet sport (but the surgeon said I could - I have not played these sports yet but I do work out in the gym); I told her the surgeon said I had a little redness irritation around the navel but she said he did not put it in his notes !!" - Well, he is the one who brought it to my attention !? The concern is that this little "pin prick" feeling does not get better - it stays the same. The surgery report says I have Tycron stitches. I guess I should demand to see the surgeon or go for a second opinion or get an X-ray? (I have asked questions throughout, as that is my M.O.).

elimination diets will help with the reflux as I am down to sweet potatoes, gluten free toast, oatmeal with a bit of almond milk and organic chicken. I'm pretty tired of it after 3 months but everything else seems to bother me. The pepcid works as long as I don't have the hernia slide up. Then the pepcid will not work. It's just such an awful way to live. Who is the world doesn't bend over a few dozen times a day yet the doctors say take a drug, eat less food and don't bend over. Instead of just fixing the hernia so that I can have quality of life again. I'm so done. Sorry Linh. Don't mean to rant but this wears your life away.

No need to apologize at all, believe me it is therapeutic to hear you are not alone! Your pepcid experience with the hernia slide up perhaps explains what I deal with, thanks for sharing. My doctors haven't mentioned anything about bending over, so thanks again for another tip.

As far as meals go I ordered a battery food sensitivity test on sale, and plan to use any reactions as a starting point for elimination diets. Hopefully the results will give me some insight where to begin trial eliminations. I had read the Docs had a backlog of urgent surgeries to do following COVID restrictions, no idea if their O.R. schedules finally cleared that backlog off their calendars yet. Sounds like your doctors want their patients to give it the old college (lifestyle changes) try before they take anyone under the knife. That or your insurance has tied their hands.

Ask Gastro Dr about CREON med . I tried it but unfortunately for my issues it didn’t work . I think for yours it would !
It’s RX only .
My gosh you are so sweet and nice . I wish we lived closer . I’m in West Melbourne FL .
Where are you and how many Drs have you seen ?

I will ask-thank you for the suggestion. I live in Ontario, Canada. I swear we have the worst doctors. All the good ones go to the States because they get paid better. Brain drain. Lucky you - sucks for us. I haven’t seen that many doctors, just the 2 in emergency and my own doctor (who is really quite useless) but it took me ten years to get a doctor. My husband hasn’t had one in all the time we’ve lived here in Ottawa and that’s 40 some years. Not enough docs for the populace. I’m terrified to try anything new as I react so badly to EVERYTHING. Are you med sensitive too?

Thanks for that. I think I’m driving my husband nuts, constantly talking about it. I should just shut up because I don’t want him to worry. He’s not the healthiest guy in the world. I wish I had pearls of wisdom so no one else had to go through this but I’m stuck at the moment. Just trial and errors and lately it;s all errors. No matter what I try I can’t seem to get things to quiet down. Can I ask how come you are not taking a ppi? All docs pour that stuff down your throat. I think they get a percentage of sales. I get the college try but I think the patient should be listened to more and if one has no quality of life then let them have the operation if they want it. I’ve heard of wonderful testimonies of people feeling like human beings again.

It’s bad enough taking the Pepcid which still causes me to get depression but not as bad as a ppi. I take 20mg in the morning and wait 30 to 60 minutes before I eat my oatmeal. And if I start to not feel good in the evening I take a charcoal tab and a Gaviscon. I don’t want to do 40 mg of Pepcid. I will still have to wean off the 20 as it is. You and I are lucky it helps us instead of the stronger ppi which is practically impossible to get off of. Yes for sure check that bee pollen. Allergies are not to be taken lightly.

I am not considered a candidate for a ppi because of the degree of osteoporosis I have. I took one briefly when younger, and it altered liver function labs so the G.I. doctor tapered me off of it. I don't know your age, but doctors in general have a thing about operating on patients over a certain age it seems like. I receive care at a teaching hospital clinic, my doctor graduated so there is always hope their replacement will listen!

I've been dragging my feet about putting more effort into planning and cooking meals. I have reach the point where there is no way around it any more. Cooking is one of the few things you can do in California and not get taxed to death (no tax on food, except junk food).

I have G.I. issues at both ends. Just got back from the doctor who believes I am having spasms (at the other end). I hear you, if it isn't one thing, it is another! I think I will check my magnesium level because I seem to recall Pepcid can lower it. It has really helped me to know I am not alone. Thank you so much for sharing your experience.

I am sorry you are going thru all this. I have a sliding hernia and bend at the knees when something has to be picked up. that has helped me because my trunk/head stay upright enough to prevent problems. If you haven't tried that you may want to and see if that does the trick for you. You can also try "grabbers" if all you want to do is pick up something light (people usually use those to grab stuff off high shelves). There may be other options. For instance, I use a picker-up suction cup at the end of my pickleball paddle so I don't bend over to pick up a ball. Good luck!

Thank you baguette. I am trying to remember to bend my knees but a lifetime of doing otherwise is a hard habit to break. I slipped up 3 times this week and suffered the consequences. Sure hope I can reprogram my brain. It certainly makes the difference when I do. How are you doing? Are you having acid reflux? Do you take something for it?

I am starting with osteo too. It's in my neck. Getting that dreaded hump. Can be painful some days too. Glad that they found out for you otherwise you could of had permanent damage, like in your kidneys.
I'm 64. I guess that makes me on the old side but I have seen them give surgery to 70 and 80 year olds. You would think they would want to do it when one was younger than that and had a better chance.
Canada is the second highest taxed in the world. Inflation is so bad these days that business has dropped for the last 3 months straight. I can't blame the people. Having a roof over your head and food in your stomachs is more important than buying some little do da.
Both ends - now that's not funny. I had that a long time ago and had to stay home from work for like a month. Never sure what had caused it but my boss at the time told me to put a diaper on and get back to work. I'm sure karma will get her for that remark. People have no idea what another person suffers with. It cost nothing to be kind. You just never know. Magnesium is a good thing. I use the topical one as I have enough trouble putting ANYTHING in this body without a reaction.
You are so not alone. I have met so many people suffering just like us. It's insane how they cannot do a better job at fixing this. Over a billion people suffer reflux. All over the world. There is a swedish doctor I believe who specializes in the stomach who created a new device called RefluxStop. It looks so darn promising. If I had the money I would go over there and have the operation. It's some little gadget put into a pouch at the top of the stomach and it stops ALL reflux. They repair the hernia at the same time. And it doesn't restrict the esophagus so no worries about vomiting or not being able to swallow food. Why can we not have that here. Maybe if enough of us prod our gastro docs they will look into it. I've been trying all week to get the capsule endoscopy. Cannot find anyone in Ottawa. Might have to go to Montreal to get it done. I tell you, the hoops we have to jump through to get things done. I'm also trying to get a ct scan as its safer than an endoscopy but if I do it at a private clinic it will cost me. The wait time here is like 18 weeks otherwise. I might just have to do it myself.

Yes I am med sensitive to a lot of medications .
That med I did not have side effects from .
I’m on my 6 th Gastro Dr in 2 states , NC and FL now . They all stink . No one can fix me . I’ve done all my own research and tried so many different supplements and even holistic treatments. Yes I have many diagnoses but they also say some is Functional and they can’t fix those issues .
My latest Gastro Dr is an hr away and I just did yet another Endoscopy & Colonoscopy w/ biopsies. Same 6/7 things wrong . They did just find I have borderline Crohn’s but my Dr won’t acknowledge it or try me on any of the treatments for it .
She only put me on an antidepressant in Oct that I took 6 months.
I’m so freaking frustrated like you ! Your husband really needs at least bloodwork done ✔️ . That’s a long time not to see any Dr! Do baseline testing too .
I wish you well. Life is so hard being chronic.

I've got the perfect storm. Is anyone suffering multiple issues? I am going through the change so dropping estrogen is making things pretty miserable, I have a bad gallbladder so I cannot eat any fat, I have gastritis so am on a strict diet so it can heal, and my hernia tore a larger hole when it slipped up through the opening after I stupidly drank a full glass of juice and then bent over for an hour weeding the garden. I am medicine/vitamins sensitive so I have opted to take Pepcid AC for the gerd but it does cause me to have anxiety and depression. I try to sit tall and straight but do slouch a little which forces the stomach up so easily and then the reflux comes on like crazy. I can't catch a break. Anyone have any suggestions of any kind? I will listen to all of your advice as I just do not trust the doctors. ER doc refused to listen to me and gave me a ppi which caused such a severe heart pain I immediately refused to take any more.

It's like they all read the instructions from a cereal box and THAT'S IT. They cannot think for themselves. They saw it in writing so that's the law and they can't go outside the lines of the coloring book. I HATE that I have to research so much. I don't know the lingo and have to look EVERYTHING up and my brain hurts at the end of the day. It's physically exhausting. I don't want to be a doctor but they have left me no choice. Most of us are med sensitive. It's called BEING A WOMAN. Hormones shift and we go through hell with that but none of that is taken into consideration. And then add on all this cr@p - makes me one cranky old lady. If I was younger I would go back to school and take holistic medicine. I just cannot believe how many of us there are. Over 1 billion. ONE BILLION. That's insanity. I've been researching a new surgery that came out in 2018 in the UK called RefluxStop. It sounds so promising. I cannot wait for it to come to Canada. It is supposed to be here by now. I would be surprised if the States doesn't get it first though. Check it out if you have time. I am definitely signing up for that one. Your doc sounds about as brainy as mine. Sorry to hear the runaround that she is giving you. When they don't know something they fake it instead of just saying they don't know. I have more respect for the honesty of a person who admits lack of knowledge than a faker. Chrons is a tough one. Science has not come a long way with it yet. They are still in the dark ages and use the same old - same old. I know a few people who have had their whole stomachs removed and are still no better. Terrible disease. It all is actually. There can be no sissies in this game. We are some tough nuts Rozy. I've been dealing with this for a while but not as long as you. I don't know how you do it. You are incredible. I hope I have 1/4 of your strength and can make it through this nightmare Take care and God bless.
