Stage 3 Kidney Disease and Diet: What can I eat?
It seems there is very little you can eat that is healthy for the Kidneys. The web site Davida has plenty of food on it but contradicts what other sources say. Anyone know anything for breakfast, lunch and dinner that does not have any sugar or flour bodies the obvious boring or bland foods good for Kidneys and I’m allergic to sugar of any kind of sweetener and flour. Thank you.

I am also learning a lot from this group -- far more than from my nephrologist. I do not have elevated potassium or phos. although my eGRE is in the 30's. However, should I still limit my consumption of foods with a fair amount of these elements? No one really talks about sugar. If it definitely off limits? Coffee?
@sdanderson007 When we are dealing with Chronic Kidney Disease on a daily basis, we are looking at trends in our labwork. In my experience, now is definitely the time to be watching sodium, potassium, phosphorous, calcium, protein and sugar levels. Be watchful, and watch your labs. I drink one cup of coffee a day, in the morning.

The Cooking Doc’s Kidney-Healthy Cooking by Blake Shusterman,MD. He is a board certified Nephrologist.
I bought it used on Amazon cheap. Excellent recipes that are delicious! Watch his videos on YouTube too. Very instructive and helpful. He even has live Q and A podcasts. Excellent doctor. Excellent dietary advice for stage 3. Hope this helps.
Thank you kidneybean1 for the book recommendation. I’ve been reading about the importance of avoiding processed food. It’s common sense really to just eat “real” foods but a reminder never hurts. That includes protein substitutes like plant based cheeses, crackers, etc. A guideline given was if an item has more than 5 ingredients or two you don’t recognize… avoid it. Is sprouted bread okay to eat?
I see conflicting information and feel there is little I can eat so I avoid going out. I am just confused. With some spices and no salt, I find my numbers are still mixed. Sodium is barely in range. I guess I must be eating something with high sodium as I add NO salt.

Talk to your nephrologist about vitamins and mineral supplements. My nephrologist said my kidneys are too sick to handle vitamin and mineral supplements. Eat nutritious, well balanced meals like the Mediterranean diet has so you get all your vitamins and minerals in your food. Only Vit. D she has prescribed for me. My lab reports show I am getting enough of vitamin and minerals I need. Green leafy veggies and variety of fruits instead of supplements are better.
Benazir-Yes. I eat Ezekiel bread. If you google “Ezekiel bread good for kidney disease patients”-you will find article from health.clevelandclinic.org. with the reasons why it is so healthy for kidney patients as well as a good option for people with diabetes.

Keep a food log for a week. Read sodium content in labels. Shrimp and seafood are from the ocean, so they are high in salt. Find a good renal dietician that will help you. I did and it really helped me.
