Retina growth causing blindness - Need advice
Hi everyone! My eyesight went from do-able with +1.75 cheaters to impossible to read sometimes even with glasses this year. A few weeks ago, I had sleepers. As I closed one eye at a time to fix that, I realized that my one eye was fine while my other one was unable to see more than smudges except for peripherally. I set up an appointment and saw an optometrist on Tuesday. She took a ton of pictures and told me my retina was growing. What should look like two hills with a gradual valley in both eyes looks normal in one eye and like a kaleidoscope. With the abnormal eye, I can't even read the big E! She referred me on to a specialist, but I am concerned about what lies next, if I will see again, what is this called, why did it happen, etc. Can anyone help me out? Furthermore, I live in ND. How far away do I need to go to find a doctor who has experience with this condition? I am a half-blind teacher concerned for my future. Please advise if you can.

Vision in one of my eyes is deteriorating quickly due to a tissue growth covering the retina. My vision has gone from 20/20 to 20/65 (corrected) over the past 9 months. My doctor is recommending surgery to remove the tissue but indicates that there is a 30% chance that the surgery could damage the retina making the vision even worse. Additionally, it is not possible to predict how much the vision will be improved if the surgery is successful. If anyone who has had this problem and had the surgery can provide input as to the results I would appreciate it.
I also have this problem. I can't even read the large E. Did you find a treatment? Who is your doctor? Are you happy with the outcome? Please do let me know. I am feeling alone in my one-eyed'ness
Hi @suejj, welcome to the Eye Conditions group. I merged the 2 discussion about retina growth into one.
I can imagine this is very concerning especially as a teacher. I'm tagging @trellg132 @rosemarya @dsh33782 to bring them into this discussion. While they may not have the exact same thing as you, they understand the fear of losing one's eyesight and retinal issues.
Sue, might you be referred to a retina specialist? What specialist did the optometrist refer you to?
I can't say what your problem is but my husband has a disciform scar in the center of his retina which will eventually destroy the retina in that eye, causing blindness. He has wet AMD in that eye. You do need to see a specialist as soon as possible. Get an appointment with an ophthalmologist that is a retina specialist. I don't know who you could see in North Dakota. You could try going to Mayo Clinic in Rochester. They have an excellent department there. We travel to the BayCare Eye Clinic on Mason St in Green Bay, WI. Good luck to you. I hope you are able to see someone soon.
Obviously, I don't know if your problem is the same as mine, but the symptoms sounds similar. I have been diagnosed with an epiretinal membrane that is growing on my retina. The ophthalmologist described it as scar tissue on the retina. I have been seen by a retina specialist who is recommending it be surgically removed. My understanding is that this surgery, although involving risk, is fairly routine. At least one person among my group of friends has previously had the same surgery. I highly recommend you see a retina specialist, though. I hear you that vision problems are concerning. We definitely want to make sure we are seeing the most skilled physicians. Best of luck to you!
Hi.sounds like you need to search online for qualified retinal specialists either in your state ,city ,or county.I was also slowly going blind and unable to read.Everything I looked at that was straight lines eg ,poles on roadside, cupboard door edges ,etc . I got referred to an eye specialist in my city who told me it was Retinal Scarring and I would go blind and nothing could be done.
I was scared and cried all weekend. Then got to work online searching out this disease and specialists world wide who treated this disease. Found a Dr in Miami clinic and a paper that was published by this specialist in Miami. In a report it mentioned a Dr from Canada who learned his operating technique and made too,s to do this surgery successfully. So lucky because it would cost me a lot to fly to Miami from Canada. Also our Health cover Might not cover his care.
I went to my Optometrist who said he actually trained with this Dr mentioned in this clinic who specializes in Retinol scarring surgery at the Toronto Western Hospital in Toronto Canada.
They have amazing eye specialists there and a new Eye Tower building just for treatment of eye diseases.
I had surgery within 4 weeks and now have 20/20 vision.
So start by looking up growth on retina and then treatments available and newest techniques etc I’m sure you will find who you need
