Is anyone experiencing increased GERDS/Acid Reflux?

Posted by rhondat23 @rhondat23, Sep 14, 2023

For many years I have been on generic Prilosec and after trying Fosamax I had to start taking Famotidine as well for severe Acid Reflux. I have had both upper/lower scope and everything checks out fine. I started Evenity in June and now I am experiencing severe acid reflux even while taking Prilosec and Famotidine. Has anyone else experienced an increase in acid reflux while taking Evenity?

Next week I have an appointment with a Nutritionist and am hoping they can help.

I know both of these acid reflux medications can contribute to osteoporosis. However, I have tried stopping but my acid reflux is too bad. I have tried ginger tea, not eating (chocolate, onions, garlic and tomatoes) but none of this seems to help. Prior to starting Evenity I had my acid reflux well controlled. I don't believe acid reflux is a listed side effect, so I am reaching out to see if anyone in our support group is experiencing the same issue and has figured out a way to alleviate the discomfort. Thanks for your support!!!

I too have had on and off issues with acid reflux and at one time took omeprazole - was off for many years - until I started fosomax and acid reflux returned-Endo Dr. suggested Evenity and I have had my 8 th shot and and all was good but just recently have started with acid reflux again!!!

rhondat23,
I have struggled with gerd for ten years. I am currently having a bad episode. I also just finished a year of Evenity. I don’t believe there’s a connection, but I could be wrong.
I think that I always have some degree of gerd - sometimes it’s not noticeable- and then stress, weight gain, etc, activates it.

Until Tymlos, I had a lifetime experience of heartburn twice (when I was pregnant). My GERD started with Tymlos - I now have a sliding hiatal hernia (comes and goes). While on Tymlos, I had chest pains caused by the hernia and feared I was having a heart attack. For an occasional “episode” I use Tums. If Tums doesn’t work, I use Omeprazole at bedtime for a few days and the GERD subsides, sometimes for quite awhile.

Meds like Omeprazole and Prilosec have their own set of cautions, especially for those of us with OP. I think the standard (anyone can feel free to chime in) is to use these acid blockers for 30 days at a stretch, but a few days seems to work for me. I asked my cardiologist about using the blockers, and told him about my short-term bursts of them. He was happy to hear that I only take them when my GERD is bad and then only until I feel better. Constant irritation of the esophagus can cause other problems, so getting on top of the issue can be of importance down the road.

I don’t think my issues were worsened by Evenity - I’ll get my final doses on June 27. Btw, I couldn’t take oral OP meds because of indigestion and stomach upset. As always, check with your OP doc or your PCP about what’s best for you if you have GERD or GERD-related issues.

Cheers, y’all!

I took Fosamax just once. I have GERD and it went NUTS! I am normally able to control it with being a healthy weight, eating 4-5 small meals instead of just one, never eating after 6pm for a 10 pm bedtime, no alcohol, sleep my first several hours on my right side, with my bed tilted so my head is 10" above my feet. But the Fosamax created AGONY. It's the only OP drug I have tried.

mlwh,
Gerd is the reason that I have been declining the oral bifosphonates for 20 years.
I thought gerd sufferers were supposed to start out sleeping on their left side?

I started Gerd symptoms from Fosamax and had the beginnings of gastric ulcers after only two pills. I quit the meds, treated the ulcers, and all ulcer symptoms disappeared about a year later. After experiencing a light form of Covid, I then developed silent Gerd (Laryngopharyngeal reflux or LPR). Had to change my diet, took meds, and bought a wedge pillow and did sleep only on my left side. After two years, all symptoms were finally gone. So sometimes Gerd can be the result of a viral infection, not always from medication.

I’ve had Gerd for many years & it flairs up on occasion & is really bad. My doctor put me on Dexilant. It is a proton pump inhibitor. It takes about 3 weeks to really make a difference but if you continue with it every day it works wonders! It is very expensive but there are discounts & programs that will help out with the expense.

I too never epeereinced stomach issues until Tymlos. Now that said, I dont drink caffeine, alcohol, or eat tomates or pungent foods - so I am careful with my diet.
Tymlos side effects for me, were upper stomach pain, aggressive belching, food sitting in my throat, excessive spit ( I neve spit!) and medicinal tast in my mouth. I was losing weight.
I contcated an ayurvedic phyisican who helped me manage my symptoms so I could continue the medication. It took a few months to figure out, but I now an ok on tymlos as long as I take the herbal formulations for digestive support. Side effects in many cases point to an imblance that is already there and is unmaksed due to the stresses of the new medication. There is no one size fits all solution but effort and a good fuctional doctor can work with you and help support the body in dealing with medicines.

Sounds like we had the same digestive history and issues. I solved the immediate problem by giving up on Tymlos - there were so many other problems with it/me - and switching to Evenity. However I am still dealing with the leftover side effects of Tymlos.

I’m glad you weighed in and happy you were able to find a workable remedy.

Cheers!

What are the full symptoms of acid reflex? I just stopped Evenity in May. After that I just realized through your comments on stopping Evenity that it’s possible I’ve had this side effect. I started about a month ago coughing up mucous for up to 45 minutes clearing my throat and nose and spitting on tissues to cough it up. I don’t know if this is listed on the Evenity side affects…but it’s really time consuming. My appetite is a bit down and I’m fatigued. I was told to start on Reclast or Prolia ( both of which make me scared.) ( they say it’s to hold the bone growth of 27% in my hips) Anyone know of another med that can hold the bone progress? I have to do oral surgury and am trying to start in a week..while I don’t have anything dealing with osteoporosis meds. Does anyone know how safe it is to be away from Osteo meds for 2 months or 2.5 months while I tend to oral surgery needs? I can’t find too many specifics to help me…please add anything you think might help.
