How about knee and lower leg pain?

Posted by gailg @gailg, Jun 2 1:39pm

I've had undiagnosed PMR for 4 years. Doctors said that wasn't it because of the blood tests but after being part of this group for many years, I am sure I have it. I have managed with higher doses of ibuprofen when it is bad. Started in arms and shoulders and was really bad. Slowly went away but changed to hands. Hand got better and then it went to hips, upper legs. That finally got better and I was feeling pretty good when the knees started hurting. Now it is knees and lower legs with nerve pains around the ankles. Anyone else have progression like this? Especially the knees? I am so tired of all this this, as I'm sure we all are.

Me too. At times it seems like part of the departure process is having the disease have a last fling around the body! A shoulder here, knees suddenly start up, muscle down the outer part of the calves feels like I’ve done a marathon. No logic to it. Can be active or could have had a rainy day in just sitting. I’m just going to keep working through it too. Not much choice really 🙂

I love your thought about a "last fling" as part of the departure process. I'm not sure it ever departs but I'm going to start thinking this way!!

I agree with @jabrown0407, don’t continue taking pain meds without trying to figure out the root cause. I too have had migrating pains. Went undiagnosed PMR 2.5 years. Daily pred helped me get my life back, now just 5mg/day. But still had weird migratory muscle pain that felt like I hiked 10 miles uphill and didn’t fit any list of PMR symptoms. I discovered I have Mold Mycotoxin illness and also Lyme’s Disease. These two diseases can wreak havoc with your body. I discovered that eating animal protein was the cause of my migratory pains, so avoiding animal protein and also gluten (causes pain in my thumbs). Recently got AAT desensitization treatments (look it up) and can eat meat/dairy no more migratory pain. I’m only 55 and I’m hoping that I can beat this PMR monster if I keep searching for answers. Don’t give up or give into a life on pain killers (they don’t really work anyway)— life is so much better living rather than just existing!

I have a question. In June of 2022 I had total knee replacement on my left knee, today I have a small suprapatellar
of joint effusion, at least that is what the CT has said. I read I might need surgery to correct the problem, does anyone know if that information is accurate?
Has anyone had a similar problem.
Thank you in advance for any information because I do not know what to do.

I was having knee and lower leg pain. A good quality shoe store near us offered free foot evaluations by a C.Ped (certified pedorthist). I found out I was buying the wrong size and type of shoe for my foot problems. I was also going barefoot a lot, making things worse. He helped me choose a really good shoe with an orthotic and I started wearing Haflinger slippers in the house. I couldn’t believe that in 2 days, my knee pain disappeared and lower leg pain eventually went away as well. I am now a believer. C.Peds can get prescriptions from physicians, but many also do these independent evils. Highly recommend.

I'm sure I have PMR but also sure I have back and knee issues unrelated. Juggling many different aches, illnesses is tough. First thing I asked to be checked for was Lyme but it came back negative. I'm not on full time pain meds, only when needed and really need to stay off prednisone. I'm doing OK and mostly doing what I want. Hope you are too. Thanks for your thoughts.

Prednisone has caused my sugar count to go way up to cause Diabetes 2.
I am upset and have another problem. Doctor said the Diabetes condition was caused by the Prednisone. Nuts!
