I two struggled with diarrhea (liquid stool). My doctor told me to do the following: take 1 teaspoon and 1/2 of Metamucil each day. That worked for me! After I got the liquid controlled, I only take when my stool begins to get too liquid. Applesauce is a fairly good food for thickening the stool.
