Rash around the stoma

Has anyone or does anyone have a rash around their stoma and what have or had you done to make it better or go away? I have a rash that will not go away and have tried several different things with no success in getting rid of the rash. Any help would be appreciated.

It is a really bad rash that itches like poison ivy when I take off the bag. I have tried the new appliance approach but I need a bag that is deep convex that doesn't irritate the skin. I don't think they have such a bag out there yet and so wish they did. Thanks for your reply!

It may be moisture induced dermatitis. Sometimes I get that if I wear the appliance too long (14days). When I get that I clean and dry the area then apply a light dusting of Desenex, then dab a skin prep wipe over that, air dry and put the appliance on.

If it’s sore because of a reaction to the tape border on the appliance, you’ll need to find an appliance that won’t irritate your skin.

Monkeywings, the picture above looks like either a reaction to the tape border on the appliance, or moisture induced dermatitis. Sometimes I get that if I wear the appliance too long (14days). Monkeywings, being that the soreness correlates with the Outer tape border of the appliance, then it’s probably a sensitivity to the material in the appliance itself.

Ravna, I am curious - how long do you wear the urostomy bag? I was told to change it every 3 or 4 days and that frequency was wearing me out(not exactly the highlight of my day, just stressful to do it perfectly every time to minimize the chance of a leak) plus it was a burden to track it on the calendar.
I now change it every Sunday, which is easy to remember. I thought I was pushing the limit by going a week, you mentioned 14 days, wow! Any concern about getting a UTI?

Ravna, I am curious - how long do you wear the urostomy bag? Maybe I have a sensitivity to the adhesive on the flange?

14 days was mentioned by Ravna, that is who my post was addressed to.
Now, for your skin issue - I use the same ostomy bag as you do(the first one on the left of your pictures) but I add a Adapt CeraRing Barrier Ring to the hole/the opening, before sticking it on me. You did not put up a photo of that item so I thought I would ask if you do? That has provided me with a perfect seal, never a leak. I have had a skin inflammation similar to yours but only in the summer in Phoenix because I am outside with my horses and sweating. I learned the "crusting"technique and it worked perfectly, quickly too. If you are interested, go to YouTube and search for "ostomy skin irritation treatment", it is a lot of extremely useful information and technique videos. Well worth the research!

I also change every week. It's much simpler and stay nice and tight. No leaking.

Cromme50, it’s the ileostomy I can sometimes go 12-14 days…the urostomy tops out at 8-9 days 🙂
