Safe to see a Chiropractor for back pain with Multiple Myeloma?

@ancopau1998 Angie, I would certainly ask your myeloma specialist for their opinion! There are times a myeloma patient has bone pain, or spinal issues related to their myeloma case. and a chiropractor simply is not educated in that area.

Have you spoken to your doctor about the chronic low back pain you experience? Are there triggers for it, like certain movements, time of day, sleep positions, activities? When you mention chronic, how often does it occur for you? What have you tried so far for treatments?

I would also be concerned of bone lesions and compromised bone strength.

Hi Ginger, I have tried Physical therapy, pain management I have been seeing for about 7 years and he has tried pain meds some opioids which do not work, Pain meds are limited because of kidney disease. I have also tried Acupuncture it did not help either. It is very hard to go places because after about 10 steps I have to sit or bend. If I did not have this back pain the only symptom I would still have would be the fatigue from MM.

@ancopau1998 Angie, I echo what @mikxtr said, about being concerned for bone lesions.

Perhaps an MRI is in order to check for bone lesion concerns?

Angie P posted regarding low back pain but did not mention stage of Mulitiple Myeloma, but her concern about chiropractic use. Angie and others, if you ask your Mayo Care team they most likely can have a complete package of resource materials including a Yoga DVD which is light yoga movements to help you keep moving. Ask them if a heat pad will help and also ask about light massage. Just a few thoughts for you to consider.

She did not stage it but she *did* mention that she has it. In order to be diagnosed (regardless of stage), one criteria is to have some form of end organ damage, one of which is bone lesions. I did not tell her she has bone lesions and neither did Ginger. But chronic lower back pain tends to be associated with them so I called out a concern.

Hi, I do not have any bone lesions I had a Pet scan. I have had this back pain for many years way before I was ever Dx with MM. I also forgot to mention I had injections x 3 times in my back, they did not work. MRI showed DDD and I also have a herniated disc, I do not want back surgery, it seems like your not guaranteed and I seen to many people having to have another one. I'm in Ohio and see pain Management now for many years also. I just live my life the best that I can take it slow and use a rollator when I have to go far. Oh Dr. said stage 3. If you have a herniated disc have you considered an epidural steroid injection at that level? They can be very effective and give you months of pain relief. They can be repeated 3x if needed and reduce the inflammation of the nerves being irritated by pressure from the disc. A recent MRI is helpful to determine the exact location and level where the injection is needed. It’s done by a pain management/anesthesiologist under xray guidance and sedation. I have had several and swear by them.

Hi @alkanowit, yes I had injections x3 and did not do anything for my back. That was about 4 years ago When I go to pain Management I will ask if the anesthesiologist could try again. I'm sure glad they worked for you!!

I see NUCCA Chiropractor for my neck which effects my entire nervous system. I have several friends who see him for back pain. Between him and my craniosacral sacral therapist .
I hope you can find some relief!!
