How do you deal with aging?

Posted by prcrowe @prcrowe, Jan 1 10:04pm

How do you emotionally handle aging and knowing that you only have a limited number of years left in your life? I'm turning 80 years old in 5 months, am in quite good health, work fulltime, and am incredibly grateful for the life I have. But, I find myself obsessed with the thought that I only have "x" amount of years left in my life. I've never figured out how to live one day at a time. Any suggestions from those of you around my age or older would be SO appreciated! (I'm "kind of" spiritual, but not really religious so that's not something that seems to help with my fear.)

I am 73, 74 in June , I also feel like I am in good health, work full time and have the normal aches and pains. I sometimes think about the finite number of years I have left, that I’m in my winter season now. But my saving grace , I work in a hospital as an RN a profession I have felt privileged to be a part of for the last 33 years. I just
Look around everyday at the bigger things my patients are having to deal with, the day to day struggles they are having and I realize I have no room for self pity. I am healthy relatively and most of the time , I am upright and still moving I feel
Blessed everyday.

I am so impressed that you are working full-time as an RN and you are in your 70’s! Amazing!

I am 59 and pace myself, so that I can continue working full-time until I turn 65. I beat AML 7 years ago, but live with some of the side effects of my stem cell transplant. I am blessed to be able to work in higher ed, where work challenges are more mental than physical. So far, my mind is keeping up with what I need to do for my students.

So happy for you to be able to continue with your calling. So happy you were able to get on top of the AML. I transfuse a guy weekly with myelofibrosis CA of the bone marrow, he is the toughest fighter I know and I pray for him daily. I think I keep
Loving being an RN because it has never felt like a job , just a priviledge my entire life.

I think having a meaningful job where I see the contributions I make to my students’ education makes my job so rewarding. I am an academic advisor, advising pre-pharmacy students. Seeing their genuine appreciation for what I do for them helps me get up in the morning and deal with the interstate traffic to get to work. Graduation time is like icing on a cake when I see all of my students’ efforts pay off. It’s also a validation for my efforts and for the part I play in helping them succeed!

Now don't laugh but I love going through cemeteries. There is so much history to be found. I'm an intermediate genealogist so the dead are living to me. I talk to my ancestors at FAG (Find a Grave). It's very therapeutic. Now you've got a story: married for 58 years and then meeting up with an old 8th grade male friend. I find that so enchanting. I can read that you've had a very interesting life. Be positive. Just keep telling yourself you are a centenarian in training.

@cb3 You love cemeteries? You must visit New Orleans! Due to the water table all graves must be above ground. And boy, do they have some interesting ones🤣🥳

Wow! I’m native Sonoma County - glad you are enjoying a new state. I’ve pondered the idea of trying another state (Husband is from Wisconsin) for the experience of it - but love having all my family nearby, and do love where I live, also. The dream actually is a 20 foot camper van and go where ever we want when we want. Wow. That sounds so great. Husband still works. That puts a bit of a hamper on it for now

Thank you for bringing this up. It's interesting. In my genealogy searches, I have found several cemeteries destroyed by weather or vandalism, but nothing like New Orleans where you have city blocks of burial sites built above ground. I found one that was built in the year 1794. Fascinating. Thanks. Best, CB

Hi all: I have been learning about being old since turned 80. I am 85 and I feel what is good for me is my career as an artist(painter) which I continue to work at everyday...and as time passes I notice different things happening to me that happened with my husband(deceased 2008) who was 21 yrs my senior. It reassuring and calming to say to myself "oh yeah I remember this" I also promised myself about 4yrs ago to avoid stress as much as possible. If it is not going to be fun or feels too stressful to be fun say NO! You don't have explain just say "no thanks, am busy". I also hang out with younger people, make sure I get between 8 & 9 hrs sleep or take naps if needed. I am an artist and I try to be creative everyday one way or another
