My urologist (and second opinion doc) said that having prostatectomy after 70 years old is not recommended. They said that the odds of life long urinary leakage is much greater if done after 70. They said that you can find urologists who will do this surgery after 70 but much higher urinary problems can occur. Any one else get this advice?

That advice is so 20th century. We've all heard the same "60 is the new 50" or the equivalent. As a medical student in the 1970s, that was the rule of thumb for surgery. Now with improved surgical techniques and equipment, more careful anesthesia, early ambulation, and, most important, older people who take good care of their bodies, that is no longer the standard practice.

I'm sure there are a lot of folks on this forum who, like me, had RP in their mid-70s and did not have increased side effects or prolonged incontinence, same as those 1-2 decades younger.

More important to surgical recovery are body weight and co-morbidities, as well as willingness and ability to do the months-long rehab required. Oh, and an experienced, confident surgeon...

my oncologists told me the end result is the same which you decide to do......so I had RT and ADT done 1 1/2 years ago....I m 75 now.....feel tired but no such thing as urinary leakage or bowel problems as they used SPACE OARS. My friends who have had the prostatectomy are tired a lot too, just like me.

72 - my age at diagnosis and RP surgery at COE in Aug 2022.
I defer to post by trusam1.
My surgical results were excellent, and my preferred choice of treatment even though my postop G 9 w/ EPE foretold PSA persistence, which necessitated Salvage Radiation and short term ADT 1st half of 2023.
No physical limitations and excellent continence: I walk, play golf and have been fortunate enough to have taken two 2 week trips to France and Italy Nov 2023 and Apr 2024.
No commorbidities; just a bit heavier than I would like (guy speak for "a little fat").
Best wishes for your treatment decisions.

I am now 77 and three years ago I had RP and then 12 months of ADT and Erleada. I have a tiny bit of leakage, use no pads, completely ED, presently CR and G 9.

hbp thank you for posting, I am just shy of 78 and going in for RARP on Monday. It is so encouraging to see that you and others in their 70's have managed your continence.
