What supplements help Osteopenia, Osteoporosis?
Hi, I am a new member here and wanted to find out if anyone has used AlgaeCal Plus & Strontium Citrate for Osteopenia? I have had this condition for 10 years now plus five years with Osteoarthritis of the hip which I am hoping will help not only my hip but the DEXA scan came up with Osteopenia scores.

I have been using Algae Cal/Strontium for almost two years with no side effects. My next scan is in a month. My pain has lessened and I am hoping for the best. I also do resistance training and strength training. Hopefully all will be well. There are many ways to increase your muscle strength without forward bends or stressing the spine. Even walking with a hip weight can strengthen the muscles.
I do have several friends that went from Osteoporosis to osteopenia or better using only AlgaeCal and Strontium, so I am hopeful and will keep you posted.
@jodeni you can ask the radiologist to adjust the DEXA for the strontium. It will make bone density on DEXA's look better than they really are because strontium replaces calcium in bone and is denser.
Did your friends, who said they went to osteopenia, have their DEXA's adjusted?
I didn/t know that an adjustment could be made. The Imaging Dept. said to stop all supplements for 2 days prior to the scan. Do you know anything about that? Will I still need to make the Strontium adjustment?
I do not know if the scans were adjusted.

@jodeni the strontium is already in your bones. Are you taking a therapeutic dose (640mg)? Not many radiologists know how to adjust the measurements on DEXA. You can ask.

I have been taking the same supplements as Algaecal and half a dose of Strontium. My last DEXA was too good, going from osteoporosis to osteopenia. I also take half a dose of Tymlos. While on the supplements and medicine, I suffered a fragility foot fracture. My endo has now scheduled a second DEXA scan and asked me to stop taking the Strontium two weeks before the test. I have to pay cash, $50, because insurance only pays once every 2 years. Unfortunately, I have had the fracture for 10 weeks and it has not healed. I hope that cutting out Strontium doesn't make my foot worse. My endo also wants me to cut back on the calcium supplement and increase the calcium I get in food. Now I am counting the amount of calcium in my food and have been able to decrease the supplemental calcium to 500 mg to get a total of 1200 mg calcium from food and supplements. I think the ideal is to get all calcium from food. I am still taking magnesium, boron, vitamin K2 Mk7, vitamin D and collagen. After the DEXA, he wants me to take the Strontium again since it may be helpful.
I am taking a therapeutic dose,680mg/day.
Thank you for the link, i will have to be proactive on this. My hope is to have a good DEXA scan and drop back the dosage of strontium to half. But first i need to see tge results of the scan.
Oops 680! It will definitely affect your DEXA. Not trying to worry you but without knowing that, some people base decisions on a faulty DEXA 🙂 Good luck!

If the DEXA is adjusted for the strontium, than will the scan be accurate? Or are you saying it will not be accurate because of the dosage I have taken?
Might I try to go for a REMS instead? Or both? Though REMS technology is not in our local area. Hmmm...???
The DEXA can be adjusted according to the article I sent you. You can show it to the radiologist or doctor.
"The same adjustment factor (10% overestimation for 1 mol/mol% Sr) can be used for all presently available types of instrument and acquisition modes."
The professionals can also research it for you and adjust your scores. This issue does not mean strontium isn't helping!
Re the issue of too much calcium, that was a definite worry of mine so I decided to get my calcium entirely from food & I was very happy to find out how easy it has been. And by the way I am 86 with one prior fracture & awful bone numbers1
To start with I have een taking Ensure Max Protein once a day in the morning & that is 650 mg right there!
I then made a list of all the foods that I that contain calcium that I already consure or couldeasily consume every day. Fortified orange juice/almond milk/fortified 2% milk & soy milk etc. From there I went to a whole bunch of things like cheese, nuts, sardines, yogurts, etc etc but the point is it is tremendously easy to get to 1200 mg! And I feel better about that 1200 mg since it is all FOOD!
