Anxiety? Need to vent

I know there are lots of members and mentors who have knowledge and experience with this. I’m upset and need to vent. I don’t have breast cancer but both my daughters do.

Daughter #1 missed her mammogram at age 40 because of COVID (“shelter at home”). At age 41 she got her mammogram and immediately heard from her primary “I’m so sorry …..”. She had biopsies, scans and genetic testing. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer and told there was no cure. The best to be hoped for was remission to stop the spread of cancer using chemo. She is currently 43 and into her 3rd year of chemo. She has an infusion every 3 weeks and it wipes her out with fatigue and nausea for that week. Then the next 2 weeks are “ok ish”. Then the whole thing repeats. There is no end in site. She has 3 kids ages 13, 10 and 8.

I just learned that daughter #2 also has breast cancer. She called to say “I have the boob cancer”. She is 40. Her mammogram, biopsies and scans revealed Triple negative, grade 3, stage 2 invasive carcinoma. She says that she is glad it was caught early. The plan is to begin chemo on 5/13 - 24 for 4 - 5 months, then a double mastectomy with reconstruction in the fall. She has two step daughters ages 19 & 17 and a daughter age 12.

Genetic studies for both daughters showed that there is NOTHING in the family tree (mine or my husband’s) that we know of. I’ve NEVER had anything like this myself. No idea where this has come from or why. I would take this from my girls if I could. Right now I’m a REALLY angry mama / grandma and I HATE cancer.

Dear Cheryl:

My heart goes out to you, and my prayers are with your lovely daughters and entire family!

Cancer is such an unexpected enemy without any warning signs as it happened to us all. However, with the wisdom and strength from above, diligent professional treatments from doctors and loving care & encouragements from loved ones and strangers, surely your daughters will overcome the challenges that they face - step by step - and lead fulfilled and happy lives!

I completely understood and heart broken for your feeling of "would take this" from your girls if you could; for I lost my only son to an automobile accident years ago when he was a junior in UPENN and how I wish I could die in his place ever since! Life is a journey and we can only do our best - with the guidance from the gracious Lord - to stride on...

Sending you and your entire family love, positive spirit and prayers, Cheryl! Please know that you'll never be alone, for our loving thoughts and prayers are with you all.
