Loss of smell & taste

Posted by marciachess @marciachess, May 1, 2024

I loss my ability to taste and smell over 3 years ago. This was during a bout with COVID. Anyone else this lengthy? I recently had a C scan, which showed inflammation. Prednisone was prescribed, but didn't help. Also had allergy testing done - again without results.

Yes, I have lost my taste and smell since November 2020. I thought it would come back, but not yet!

I lost my taste and smell due to Covid in December of 2022. I have had 3 Stellate Ganglion Block injections and have gotten a slight improvement, meaning that I can taste salty, sweet, bitter more, but not actual flavors. I’m having a 4th one done in a few weeks. I feel your pain and do hope you’re searching for answers. I also have several food sensitivities and can’t eat certain foods due to having 18’ of my colon resected in April of 2022. I have a colon like a baby, very sensitive. No gluten, dairy or soy for me. If you haven’t already, I would contact your hospitals pain management clinic and look into the Stellate Ganglion Block injections. It’s lidocaine that is injected into your ganglion nerves in the base of your neck. It’s worth a try rather than being bored by food the rest of my life. Good luck!

I lost taste and smell August 2021. No doctors have offered any help at all. I've seen PCP, ENT and Neurologist. All said they had no idea. It is very frustrating and depressing. The smell training didn't work. I don't know what to do. I don't know anyone personally going through this so I feel very alone in this.

My sense of taste has diminished greatly over the year with long covid. Its terrible and there’s nothing I can do about it.

No, you are not alone in this loss of taste and smell. I lost mine in December of 2022. I’ve had now 7 Stellate Ganglion Block Injections and they haven’t brought back my taste/smell, but have taken some of the jitters out of my body. I guess it’s anxiety, which I never had before Covid. The doctor I see for the injections works out of Northwestern Hospital in Chicago, Il, he doesn’t have answers either. It is frustrating…I guess all we can do is wait.

Yes waiting and praying. I believe it's more smell related because I know salty, sweet, spicy, I just don't know what I'm eating. It's just frustrating to me that the Physicians I have seen have offered nothing. Thank you for your response. God bless

Huge sigh of relief - oddly - to read these posts. I tested positive in late March/early April 2023 - I didn't take a photo of the test; I knew I was sick. Within 10 days, I had swollen legs and a rash. Since then, the progression has been "fascinating" - that is, each new symptoms (tinnitus, musical tinnitus, neuropathy in my feet - more the right where the rash was on my leg, lost hearing), and now, I think, diminished taste. I noticed it the other night - perhaps wasn't paying attention. Most foods have no taste at all. I just ate a York Peppermint and I COULD taste the peppermint not the chocolate. Last night, we had a dish we make often (pasta that is "dressed" in lemon & herb infused olive oil) and I could barely taste the olive oil. Like w/ hearing loss, I check w/ my spouse - "can you hear that ok?" and this was "did you use [he the cook!] less olive oil?" to which the answer was no and "isn't it ok?" I said it was fine.

I read that symptoms go away within a year. Why would more continue to develop over time? Thankfully a new doc seen the week of 12/23 and someone who listened and is well-educated on LC.

Each time another sense is lost or something bad gained, I think it has to be a virus still in my body. New doc said it's likely since I'm in remission from non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Oh just one day of sanity and no horrible symptoms.

No, the symptoms don't go away within a year. Two years? Maybe a bit. I cremated the salmon I was broiling until my dinner guest finally said she smelled something burning. It was way beyond burned; it was almost ash.
I'm waiting for my sense of smell and taste to come back. COVID was in May, 2023, not quite two years ago. Fortunately, among the longer-lasting carryovers of COVID, loss of sense of smell and taste are of far less worry to me than if I had ended up with brain fog or the much more serious and life changing long-term sequelae of COVID.
